This went later than the 60s. I was always one step ahead of the pocket knife flip outs.
High schools banned them right around when I graduated (Thanks Bin Laden), then college a few years later, then some public places.
It seems to have calmed down a lot lately. More and more people seem to be going back to an EDC without any issue.

Drive at crazy speeds in vehicles with no shoulder harness, head restraints, front-end crumple zones, radial tires, or pretty much any significant safety feature.
Was with dad when he got followed doing 40 MPH over the highway speed limit.
The cop wrote us a ticket and politely let us drive on.

We could come home from being out and the cop be there having coffee with my dad telling him he had seen us speeding or not a full stop at a stop sign etc. Was like a fricking Mayberry with Sheriff Andy.

Cars that have bench seats w/o the console… and your date could sit right next to you. That also made it great for “ parking”.
