This time of year the Quarter is usually empty due to the heat & humidity. No large tourist conventions come to town in June, July, and sometimes Aug. So where ever you go, you should not have any crowd problems. Go to Pat O'Briens, grab a hurricane or 3 and sit in the indoor bar, enjoy the AC & the ambiance. For one.

Besides the WWII museum it is all about eating and drinking.
First time--do all the tourist stuff so you can say you did it.
Get a sazerac at the Sazerac bar in the Rosevelt, have a drink at the Carousel Bar LINK, go to Pat O's and have a hurricane and sing with the dueling pianos, might as well do Commander's Palace to say you have eaten there, ect. ect.
Ask for more recommendation on the food board.
