It's called a convenience charge. That business has to pay to have that credit card processing machine.
A lot of businesses do this nowadays.
see my response above

Splitting hairs a bit here, but if they're paying more than 2 to 2.5% in processing fees they're getting hosed. Charging 5% is adding a markup to the CC charge (that's their "right" to do) or they're getting overcharged. Pretty small potatoes on a meal ticket but it is either one of those.
you are dumb. credit card processors like Square charge the poor small business owner *AT LEAST* 4%. my wife is literally making nothing off this transaction.
the new PoS systems are easy, come with cloud storage, a fancy little ipad device and tools to manage your cash transactions but the poor business owner gets to fund all that.
its like saying 'dont like ebay fees? go somewhere else'.
not that easy.

Didn't the credit card companies used to be pretty heavy handed against merchants being able to do this? What happened to that?
Card processing companies have zero authority over what businesses charge for products and services.

you have to buy some type of system and with all the bullshite like apple pay, chip cards, tap-to-pay, etc. you will need an account with Square or someone like that who can keep up with all the payment types plus they have the connections to deposit directly to your bank account, provide cloud storage & reporting services, etc.
this isn't the days of the visa/modem device. maybe franchisee businesses or large volume customers get a discount but the poor mom and pops get screwed on fees.
my wife is not marking shite up; she either gives a discount for cash or passes the 4% along to the customer and tells them before they order.
so far not a single person has fussed about it.
i don't like it either but i don't complain when it happens to me with other local businesses.

Hey bro, I'm on your side. I'm saying a private business can charge whatever they want. It's the consumers choice to decide if they want to buy it or not.

i dont think people realize just how hard it is to keep a small business afloat; you get it coming and going and you have to have an accountant these days to sort everything out.

restaurants that charge a 5% non cash fee is BS
* they pay an extra fee to run your card
* sometimes the card is fraudulent, and is charged back
* card transactions leave a money trail
* cash is money
* cash is king
* cash may or may not be reported on da taxes

Never understood why not just add the 2,3,4 or 5% into your menu prices and if someone pays cash give them that % discount. Then nobody would be bitching because you never see the extra charge and the cash guy thinks he got a deal.
But 5% is BS there's no way they should be paying that much to the credit card company.

It's the cost of doing business.
We accept credit cards and do not charge extra fees. Part of being a business in 2023.

Seems like a you problem. Been many times, completely oblivious. Would prefer them to add the fee to the menu price like everywhere else you go…. Because out of sight out of mind??? You’re dumb
The restaurant is being transparent with their customers. “We get charged a fee for these transactions. If you pay cash we will not impose this fee” - LIKE ITS HAPPENING EVERYWHERE ELSE. You’re being given a chance to save 5% but instead would prefer them to hide it in the price so you can walk around with your head in the clouds like the stupid frick you are. Eat a dick idiot

Yes, it would. Transparency is always better.

This is gonna be a thing accross industries. Businesses have been getting raped by CC fees. Sell your Visa and Amex stock now baws.
Posted on 1/18/23 at 3:26 pm to LSUfan4444
That’s the opposite of transparent. Jesus Christ you people are stupid. Do they need to lay out both prices side by side on the menu so you can see it? Even though the end result is exactly the same lol. Tards
Posted on 1/18/23 at 3:27 pm to Baylor
Why should they have to pay the fee because you want to use plastic?
Posted on 1/18/23 at 3:29 pm to rocksteady
Hey idiot . I guess you missed the part where I said they added this fee before they even knew if I was paying with cash or a card .
No telling how many people go to this place and pay this fee even when they pay cash . I’m sure I’ve done it myself

you can't do math and remove the 5% yourself?

Get a chase freedom unlimited card. It pays back 5% for restaurants. It's a 0 loss for u and they dont the cash that they dont want to claim on earned income. Or go somewhere else.
Posted on 1/18/23 at 5:20 pm to Flashback
They blame the charge on credit card fees. That’s small potatoes. The real reason is to get more cash and they don’t pay any income taxes on it. That’s the real money maker.

Yep and I'm not playing their game. I don't go.
It's not my responsibility to keep their small businesses operating.
