Went to Izumi Ramen in lafayette .
Been many times

Most of the time I don’t read every line of the ticket . Just look at the bottom for the total add my tip then pay .

Must have been bored. Read the entire ticket.

On the bottom they add a non cash 5% charge .

First off how do they even know I was not paying cash?

I never told them I’m not paying cash.

I have gone to this place before and did pay cash . I’m pretty sure I still got charged the 5% those times I did pay cash .

First off it’s BS to begin with to charge this fee .

Secondly they default that on the ticket even before the customer even makes known if they are paying cash or not .

No telling how many people that weren’t paying attention paid cash and still got charged the non cash fee.

I’m done with that place and any other place that charges this just out of principle .

And for now on I will be checking all my tickets any place I go for now on and if they have that charge on my ticket it will be the last visit

Bye bye Izumi Ramen

Would it make you feel better if they just made your meal $10.50 instead of $10? Cause that's what the other restaurants are doing instead.

Yep. They used to hide it in the item price but guess that wasn’t enough for them

You’d still come out negative with a “3% back” credit card, even if you do all the crazy card rotations to stay under the limit and spread points around

Btw, franks in Prairieville is where I first caught this.

They are paying a fee on the credit card transaction. One way or another you are going to pay that fee if you use a credit card. At least they are being nice and giving the option to pass their savings on to you if you use cash.

I assume processing fees have gone up as I see this more and more around Louisiana. Always noticed cash options in Texas.

Places I’ve been to deduct the cost when they see you pulling out cash.

This is the most expensive Ramon place in lafayette . Don’t think they discount the price and add it to the people paying on a card

And to answer your question yes I would rather them add 50 cents to the price of the meal and charge everyone the same

Didn't the credit card companies used to be pretty heavy handed against merchants being able to do this? What happened to that?

Actually no they are not .

They did not even ask me if I’m paying cash or card . They just put the fee on there without even knowing if I was paying cash or card

Much worse than the Franks by Cortana. Even more reason to avoid.

Simple. The CC companies no longer require that from merchants.

Well yeah, but what went into the policy change? Presumably "muh COVID", but why? And we're never putting that horse back in the stable. I generally pay with a CC anyway, so I don't care all that much, but places like the OP mentioned do kind of bother me. If you're not providing the totals for both types of transactions (I've seen some that do), I find it kind of annoying.

Izumi Ramen is doing well in a location that chewed up and spit out at least three other restaurants that I can remember

Asian restaurants can swoop into 'cursed' locations like the old Bennigans and stay there 30 years because they'll do whatever it takes to get an extra 5% off you

It's called a convenience charge. That business has to pay to have that credit card processing machine.

A lot of businesses do this nowadays.

Splitting hairs a bit here, but if they're paying more than 2 to 2.5% in processing fees they're getting hosed. Charging 5% is adding a markup to the CC charge (that's their "right" to do) or they're getting overcharged. Pretty small potatoes on a meal ticket but it is either one of those.

my wife owns a small business and she gets charged 4% by the PoS (point of sale ) vendor and she just tells everyone straight up that's going to be on the credit card receipt before they even order.

nobody has complained. its just the way of things these days. is she supposed to eat that?

credit card processors have gotten much easier with vendors like Square but with convenience comes costs.
