Even if the water is off, pipes could still freeze. Drain the pipes.

Its possible there is still water in the pipes between the main and the faucets. Stop being a dick.

As long as any pipes outside are covered, you can leave the tiniest little drip and it will be ok.

We don’t live in Indiana so the weather has to get cold enough and stay at those temps for a while to actually freeze pipes.

People love to knee jerk weather around Louisiana. Yes it gets cold but not that dang cold

insulation only buys time. insulation does not add heat in only slow heat transfer, but given enough time the surface temp on the outside of the insulation will equal the inside surface temp

moving water will help delay freezing, but moving water can eventually freeze.... look at rivers that freeze

i remember christmas of '83 my dad was under the house thawing out pipes. temps stayed below freezing for 72 hrs. insulated pipes with dripping faucets still froze.

for the OP, safest bet is to kill the water supply at the meter, and drain down the pressure in the house. that means opening faucets. no risk to freeze if no water in pipes. do the same for the hose bibs outside.

make sure you turn off the water heaters as well...

as for temps 45+ should be good....

If the water is turned off, you dont have to worry about anything getting damaged. I would crack open a line just to be sure water still in the lines doesn't freeze and bust.

Temps at 55 degrees should be fine.

Google says 55

That's what I was thinking. That way the heat is only really running on the much colder days and nights.

Good suggestions from everybody, thanks. Same here, pier/beam. South Lousiana so I just keep it off. The gas is cut off, no heat or hot water. The a/c is maintained by me and works great. Only problem I have creepin' in is termites/termite damage.

Poor some antifreeze in commodes and each drain.

If the main valve is off there could very well be water in the pipes and a freeze could break the pipes.

But you are right if there is no water in the pipes.

However, many houses in this area have the main valve exposed on an exterior riser. You can turn off the main valve and take the pressure off the downstream piping, but have the pipe upstream of the main valve freeze and burst when it thaws.

This arrangement was prevalent and I never understood why they allowed that.

Not necessary if the heat is on.

I don't even turn on the heat in the house I live in until it dips down below 58. I spend all year just waiting for the cold, why would I ruin a good thing?

And obviously everyone is adjusted to the temps you are so it makes the world revolves around you right?

December of '89 in S LA says "hold muh frozen beer" to '83's event

A silver lining in '89 was the amount of frozen dead speckled trout that were free to the taking.

We keep the camphouse set to 55. Never had a problem in winter.

We keep it at 77 during summer (when unoccupied) to keep mold\mildew away.

Shut off the water at meter. And drain the pressure off the system.

Put antifreeze in the toilet bowl.
