There's no way grown men fit through this hole.

This was an inside job. I'm not buying that men 160-180 lbs could fit through this hole. My head would get stuck.
Travers Mackle should try to get through on camera. He looks about 150 lbs. Let's put this hypothesis to the test.
It's a shame that those Oreos were tossed in the bowl.

The whole thing makes no sense.
They put blankets on top of the barb wire to climb over the gate to get out?
Nobody is watching the perimeter of this facility?

Inmate 1: I don't think I can fit into that hole.
Inmate 2: Oh no, Down Low Daryl is coming

Absolutely a 160-180 lb dude can fit through that center hole. It takes some careful yoga, but it's doable.

That open space above the pipe seems pretty doable.
The perspective of your picture is just rather distorted it seems.
Most people's heads aren't bigger than a toilet bowl.

Motivation to lose a little weight. One day I might need to break out of prison

Ever see some prisoners?
Some of those guys are lucky to be a buck and a quarter.

How thick was the wall?
It looks like the middle bar was knocked off. That upper middle section is def big enough.

Perfect case of why we desperately need to reopen Alcatraz

looks like that pipe would be 1.5-2 inch pipe which would have an OD of 1.9-2.3". looks like you could fit at least 4 of those pipes left to right in the top middle section. which would be 8-9"
and it looks like on the verticle of the middle section you could fit at least 3-4 8-9" sections for a total of say around 24-30".
based on that I think a smaller skinny man could fit.

This is not what I was expecting the thread to be...

Unless it’s a maximum security prison, once inmates get out the actual buildings, the fence isn’t watched at all.
That old school stuff where there are guards in the towers in just movie stuff. If you doubt that, go by any of the different parish jails or correctional facilities. Even go up 61 and look at Wilkinson country correctional and there are no tower guards

Two of the main Penal Fixture manufacturers are Willoughby and ACORN. Both take two people to install, one plumber on each side of the wall
The mounting hardware is accessed from inside the plumbing chase on the wall opposite of the cell.
From picture it looks like the following:
LINK
the all thread rod is inserted from the chase sid into the lug threads built into the back of the fixture. with the nuts and washers mounted and tightened from the chase side.

Those vertical bars appear to be spread apart towards the top. Could they have fit there?

True. I'm sure at least a few of them are from parishes other than Orleans.
