Heard they could smell it in Houma

I was uptown this morning and couldn't smell it, but it was windy so I guess it's possible.

does anybody know what makes it a 6 alarm fire?

Alarms depend on location and occupancy type, but basically it is like this:

1st alarm: 3 pumps,1 ladder, chief, rescue, chief as safety officer

2nd alarm:2 or 3 pumps,1 ladder, chief, rescue, supply shop

3rd alarm: 2 pumps, 1 ladder, deputy chief,

4th alarm: 1 or 2 pumps, 1 ladder

5th through infinity alarm: same as 4th

I work downtown about a block off Canal and from the fire, and our building is filled with smoke.

New Orleans' fire chief said a massive six-alarm fire that broke out on Canal Street early Wednesday morning has spread to a second building and that the four-story structure initially found burning is in danger of collapsing.

Getting interesting, firefighters are redeploying because of the growing risk of a collapse.

So 6 alarm fires get less equipment? So they aren't as bad as 1 alarm?

I'm guessing that each alarm adds that equipment.

The principal danger for revelers would be the collapse of the facade of the four-story building at 1018 Canal Street. The building was reported to have caught fire at 3:23 a.m. and forced a response from 31 units and 91 firefighters from the New Orleans Fire Department.

A developer in New Orleans would never do something so underhanded. I don't believe it.
