Things have changed in the last 30 years. We pay for cable now too.

These are examples of why your rural old school vets can't survive. They never properly charged for services and created an expectation of things being cheap. Pet owners are now mad at rising costs of products and services and complain as corporates buy out the old school vets who are going out of business.

human euthanasia…..or suicide

Well, it's a personal choice now isn't it. I don't think another person can choose human euthanasia for another, at least not in this country that I am aware of. Human suicide and euthanasia has nothing to do with our discussion.

Dogs are wired that way no? I mean dogs that are mistreated still wag their tails looking for approval or affection. Obviously people can do as they wish with their pets. Me personally, will not keep my dog alive suffering just so I can see a tail wag. That is how we define responsible ownership for me and my spouse. I have no high expectations of everyone agreeing with me. I answered a question in the thread and my best hope is that my pet would pass naturally.

This thread gives me the sads because I have to have my 14 year old golden mix put down this week. She's suffering from arthritis in her hips and can't control her poop anymore. Just comes out wherever she is laying. She still gets around but is low energy.

Who in the HELL didn’t pay for cable 30years ag0??!? lol

It cost money back then too. Guy just didn’t charge for it. He figured he had taken care of those animals since they were puppies/kittens that was inhuman to profit off their owners grief at such a time. Really wasn’t costing him anything…..$5 a dose? Always admired him for that.

How about initialing next to the itemized breakdown of how much it will cost to do it and also signing the euthanasia form? And that’s after 2 vet opinions in one morning, each getting there $700 in diagnostics, then the 2nd selling a $9k surgery to save my dog, while them not telling me my pup would survive maybe 2 weeks after surgery.

Overall awful experience.

PS…if anyone wants a cash printing machine, they have multiple at Sherwood south.

Actually think it does. We’re personifying pets emotions, no? Speaking of pets as family and conveying human responsibility. I think it’s very relevant. Why is euthanasia ok for one “family member” and not another? Not legally……but morally? Not saying I’m against either. Just a question.

Ol' Tiller the Killer. He's good with large animals, no BS.

On the other hand... Horse broke a leg? Put it down. Cat sneezing? Put it down. Hamster eating normally? Put it down.

Horses are large animals. In fairness, that's pretty solid advice for a horse owner.

I’m considering pet insurance for my other dog after this whole experience and what you just described is why. Pet surgery isn’t cheap and if we had it on this dog I had to put down, who knows maybe he’d still be here. The cancer was extremely aggressive but maybe we would’ve been able to squeeze out another year with him. Now our other dog is a yorkie, and those get lots of health issues as they age. I found an unlimited policy for about $30/month for him and I’d be lying if I said I’m not about to pull the trigger on it.

And you’re right, Sherwood Animal Hospital is great but they cost a fortune.

Your dog was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, right? How was it "very aggressive"? Seems like the dog was succumbing to his disease for two weeks and you finally had to put him down. Was he being treated for the cancer? Did your vet tell you it got more aggressive or are you just assuming so cause he took the downturn?

It was steady for a long time and suddenly it took a big turn for the worse over the past few weeks and the last two weeks were really bad. Vet tested it again and said it spread and became very aggressive.

It's been my experience that they let you pay at a later date.

I've only had to put one down. Truth is, that morning is such a blur to me, a real fog, I don't remember how I paid or when I paid. Vet put him to sleep in my SUV, I covered him with his blankie and we drove around to all of our old spots for an hour or so until I was ok to say goodbye. Then I think I paid for it.

Yeah standing in line to do it and then the hundreds of dollars. I mean you care less about the money at that point but it sure doesn’t feel good.

Same thing for my Lucy, she was put to sleep, we stayed in the room a while to say our goodbyes. The tech told us she would be outside the room to take as long as we wished to just let her know when we was ready. She came in the room we notified her and asked if I wanted to bring her to the morgue or her. I chose to carry her there. We went back to a little side room and the clerk came in and had us sign the paperwork and pay the bill, we then walked out a side door. My wife went pick up her ashes a few days later. The staff and vet were very good to us.

Its a weird feeling walking in with your pet and walking out without her.

I’m sorry for the loss of your dog. That truly sucks. I feel fortunate that my dogs vet clinic has handheld card swipers and they take payment in the exam room rather than have you check out in the lobby.

Another option that we’ve utilized in the past is having a vet come to the house for things like euthanasia. We did it for one of our elderly cats and it was much better than porting a stressed out and sick animal to the clinic.

But again, it sucks no matter how it’s done.
