re: There can't be many things worse than standing in line to pay after euthanizing your dog

having been through this a number of times over the years, it's worth every penny - for the animal and owner - to pay a little extra for the in home service

May be a dumb question, but who do you call if you come home and find your dog dead, the vet or one of them pet cremation places?
Just call ahead to a local vet or emergency vet with your wishes, drop it off and pay. They’ll handle the rest.

I had to stand in line and pay after my then gf now wifes dog was put down. It sucks, but also they performed a service.

we have gone to in home vet visits to put them down. I have only done it once but my sister has done it 2-3x. I think we get billed but it is less stress on the animal.

Baw, I had no idea how sad I'd be until we did it. This one hits harder than any other pet we've lost.
Same with us, had him for almost 16 years, almost our entire relationship. He was so special to us and I am really struggling with it at times. It seems crazy but its just the way it is

I honestly didn't even think of a mobile vet because I didn't know that existed but I 100% would have done it that way if I had known about that service.

I've had 2 dogs euthanized over the years. One was at a country vet whom I'd never met and the other was at my current vet. Neither one ever charged me a dime.
Maybe seeing a grown man crying made them too uncomfortable...

Sorry for your loss.
First dog I put down, we visited the vet on Sunday and she basically told us that we should spend one last night with the pup and come in on Monday whenever we were ready. Arrive on Monday and the receptionist was being all snippy because we didn't "have an appointment". Fast forward a few hours, and I have to face this bitch (receptionist) with my dog in a box and pay her. Needless to say, she looked horrified for being so county earlier.
Ten years later, same vet, different dog, they let me pay in the private room with one of those handheld kiosks.
It's was a horrible day both times but the empathy showed by the staff the 2nd time helped.

I went through a similar experience with my dog a couple of years ago. However my dog was a regular at our vet and we felt like we paid for a wing at the vets new office. When the cancer started giving her seizures we knew it was time. I asked our vet if they could do the shot outside because she hated that place. I didn't want her last moments to be terrified of a building. They obliged and waived all fees for us. I felt it was the right thing to do. They made a killing off my dog while she was alive. Least they could do.
I understand if you have to use an emergency vet or go to a new vet for service they should charge for time and items but a vet that's taken care of your dog from cradle to grave should not charge for it..ever.

Our old vet never billed us for putting our first two dogs down.
The last one only charged for a regular vet visit.
I hope it will be a while before we have to deal with that again. Our black Lab is 5 and our Golden Shepherd is not quite 2.

Each time I've said goodbye to one of my kitties, they let me leave and call them in a day or two when I've collected myself to give them the credit card information. I've never once stood in line to pay all these years. I don't know if they do that for all of their clients. I've been going there for many many years. It's not really good to seeing sobbing clients while you're in the waiting room. I've never once seen that happen when I've been there for appointments.

My vet doesn't charge for that. If you have been there before

What do other vets do?
Your vet definitely has an odd way of handling the situation. My vet has a room he does the euthanasia in that has a door from the waiting room on one side and a door to the outside, so you just leave after your pet has passed and you have spent enough time saying goodbye. He lets you come back at your convenience and deal with the bill. I have never had to pay immediately afterward.

Paid ahead of time both times, but it was normal for me to pay for the vet services over the phone. So had I not paid ahead of time, I am sure they would have just called after a few days to give me time
We left through the main entrance, but we went through a side door to the lobby so didn't actually cross paths with anyone.

It really is convenient. I am sure it cost a little more...my sister is friends with the vet so I am not sure how common it is. I am guessing most vets offer it though

my wife and 10yo boy couldn't bear to be in the room when they stuck in the needles in so they paid up front while i sobbed like a baby until our golden died in my hands.
sucked; i just kind of got up and left.
felt numb. just had to act ok in front of the family because it was already sad enough and they could see my puffy face.
nothing worse IMO. the dog who trusts you more than anything, licking your hand as he goes to sleep forever
fricking hate it.
