There can't be many things worse than standing in line to pay after euthanizing your dog

Our dog was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago and it became very aggressive over the past two weeks and he took a big downturn. It was time to make the decision so I took him to the vet this weekend while my wife stayed home with the kids. We only had him for 6 short years but the kids grew so close to him and I didn't realize how much I loved him until I held him while taking his last breath. My vet is good and he has great pricing but their processes and customer service leave a lot to be desired.

After confirming he was deceased, they brought his body back to my vehicle, with me following, right through the waiting room in front of everyone and then made me stand in line to pay. I thought that was odd. Is this a normal process after euthanasia? You'd think they'd have let me pay while I was in the private room then let me leave with my dog's body through a back or side door - or some way to have kept a little privacy/dignity. It just seemed so tacky.

What do other vets do? This can't be normal.

Reminds me of a story I heard the other day. A lady passed out in a grocery store line. People gathered around to help and somebody grabbed her a bottle of water. When she was good they rang up the water and made her pay for it.

Hate to say it, it’s crass, but that’s kind of standard. My wife or I handle the transaction, depending on who is less attached. Otherwise, try to prepay.

Depends on the place
The emergency vet took payment before so that we could have time with her once it was done & just leave when we were ready
Regular vet has always been once it was done

ETA
Sorry for your loss

We have our dogs cremated, so arrangements are made with Heavens Pets in Metairie to pick them up from the vet office. We pay up front, have everything done in a private room and the vet leaves us with them so say our goodbyes. Once we leave they take them in the back and store them until they're picked up by Heavens Pets.

This is how my experience went last May. That sucks man.

They probably just forgot to have you pay beforehand.

I've only one it once as an adult, but I appreciated how they had it set up. It was a little comfortable side room with a completely separate exit. They bring you straight into that room once you arrive. After they did it, you could stay in there as long as you want and leave without talking to anyone. They made it a point to tell us everything would be handled a few days later.

you mfers are never happy. Surprised you aren't bitching about the cost to nuke him.

Why didn't you ask to pay prior to the procedure? Why didn't you ask to take the dog out the side door? You want them to read your mind? Speak up if you have all these needs.

That’s a big miss. I’d definitely let them know. We’ve used a mobile vet for these moments just because we didn’t want our dog’s last moments to be stressed out at the vet. I think I might have just walked out and called back later with a credit card.

I have a card on file. For normal visits I still to go the lady at the front desk who gives me an itemized receipt. The last time i had to put a pet down the vet told me she'd just email me that and I was allowed to just walk out (if I didn't have a card on file I don't know how it would have gone down though).

That was exactly how my vet handled it when we had to put ours down. Pay with the portable card machine in the room and then go out the side.

First, sorry for your and your families loss. Tough decision to make and definitely rough on kiddos and parents alike.

My experience was to pay up front when checking in. Then after the final moments and the injection and final goodbyes, being let out a side door to bring the vehicle around so they could meet you there if collecting the body to bury. Never having to go through the lobby after that moment for you and/or the wife and kids.

That has been my experience the two times I can remember having to do that, both at different facilities in different areas of the state.

We paid ahead of time and had a mobile vet come to the house to put down our 11 year old cat last year (had cancer). Highly recommend doing this if it's available in your area if you have the time and ability to do so.

When I've had to do it in person, when we didn't have notice/time, the vet just billed afterward. They certainly didn't make us stand in line right after to pay.

Relax, dude. People mourning a loss aren’t exactly in the best frame of mind.

Charge you for burial, then throw him in a big hole he dug with a backhoe on the backside of his sprawling property. Light the pit on fire every so often and cover with a layer of dirt when you start to smell it at the house.

Just saying, actually it's kind of worth it.

Imagine an emergency visit that results in the death of your pet and then when payment time comes you aren't prepared for the astronomical bill and the receptionist asks you if you have a family member you can call to borrow the money. Saw it happen with my own 2 eyes. Couldn't help but chime in and let them know how insensitive they were. They were fortunate the people involved were better humans than I am.
