Anecdotal, but I just got back from Europe a few days ago and the number of people smoking was wayyy lower than expected. I was in Germany about 12 years ago and EVERYONE smoked. This time it seemed like only slightly above average.

My great grandfather smoked until he was 103. Didn't look a day over 80 when he died

I am 63 years old, one of the realities of life I am struggling with now is that so many of the people my age that I was friends with as a kid and growing up have died. One common denominator that cant be ignored is that all of them smoked their entire lives, most died of cancer a few others heart disease. For those that started smoking as a teenager and never quit, it seems like at around 40-45 years of smoking is when it catches up with them, and if cancer or a heart attack doesn't take them out, they are left with COPD, dragging around a oxygen tank, and a life spent in and out of hospitals. Quit while you still have a chance to live.

People were a lot less uptight, that's for sure.

This is the attitude that made smoking, and drinking at lunch, and driving high powered gas guzzlers, cool.
That attitude dies when you're wheezing and hooked to an oxygen tank, but you've got the memories.

Especially if they smoked in a car with their kids after spanking them.
This would be after church on Sunday while taking a country ride in dad’s new Cadillac jamming to the Beatles on an 8 track, en route to have a picnic made up of sammiches mom made and ice cold Coca Cola in a glass bottle.

Guest in my house: "Where do you keep your ashtrays?"
Me: "They're in 1965."
