Global coffee consumption is set to fall this year for the first time since 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts. That’s even with a huge surge in bean buying at the grocery store amid pantry loading. Shutdowns for cafes and restaurants -- which typically account for about 25% of demand -- were overwhelming, and it could be a while before things pick up again.

The disappearance of cafe culture is happening in every major region. Researcher Marex Spectron estimates globally more than 95% of the out-of-home market was shuttered at some point during the pandemic. It’s the latest cruel twist of the coronavirus, which has ripped so much away from people that not even the simple pleasure of lingering over a latte is safe.

Consumers have shown they’re hesitant to dine out in droves again as economies reopen. Coffee shops, which often depend on morning commuters and afternoon breakers, have been especially hard hit. Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. has lost much of its breakfast crowd during the coronavirus pandemic, while Starbucks Corp. is retooling its model, rolling out a “pickup” store format that doesn’t have any of the tables and chairs that traditionally made its cafes a popular hang-out spot.

“If you feel like having a cappuccino, ordering it online doesn’t really work as coffee is all about the social aspect,” said Robinson.

Are you drinking more, less or about the same?

Yeah, because people are rolling out of bed at 8:50, get in the shower, and start working at 9:15 these days. They're not showing up to work at 8:00 anymore.

I am drinking more. I have this not-at-all-bad-but-in-fact-great habit of just making more coffee and drinking it when I'm bored. And the pandemic has left me a lot more bored during my non-working hours.

I actually don't believe this. Every Starbucks around here is packed throughout the day. Tim Horton's and Dunkin Donuts are growing and all seem to do good business. And that doesn't take into account people who get coffee at 7/11 or local places. ETA, OK, I see they are saying people aren't hanging out in the stores as much right now. Well, duh.

I’m buying the same amount of whole beans from my local micro roaster, maybe a little more since I’ve been working from home and will do a pour over ice coffee in my Chemex some afternoons.

Coffee consumption has shifted from at office and coffee shops to at home. The net effect of slightly less consumption doesn’t shock me as other beverage categories absorb the at home occasions.

It’s because the amount of grounds per serving of k-cups and other single serves decreases total coffe ground/bean consumption

People are probably guzzling more cokes at home than coffee.

I order beans from a company in Seattle. Can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a Starbucks or bought ground coffee in a grocery store.

I’ve been drinking coffee since way before the younger generations found it fashionable with their coffee shops, and then discovered energy drinks and it fell out of fashion again.

Nothing has ever changed with me and coffee. Community Dark Roast drinker since I was sipping on and dunking my French Bread in coffee milk as a young lad back in the early 70’s. 3;00 Coffee is still a thing in my family, and ever shall it be so.
