I have a while to go, but my wife and I have put $50 every paycheck into a separate savings account (~$200 monthly) and will allow our daughter to use it for school. Our guess is it will be around $40,000. It is automatically taken out so we do not even realize it is coming out.

Pay the loan interest at least,. That’ll help s lot.
Amazingly so. Especially when the loan wants to capitalize the interest the. You begin to pay it back.
What's worse than paying interest?? Paying interest on top of interest.

But if the return on investment is improved by going to a better school what parent wouldn’t want that for their child?
that's impossible to calculate, though (lack of good data), and it's completely situational
if you can get into the super elite, you can get a free ride at an incredible school. there will be very little difference

and private schools are a complete ripoff (for 99.9% of the population) unless you're going to the very top (ivies, stanford, etc)

I took a minimum of 15 every semester except my last. Spare me the nonsense.

What a little man.
This is just getting embarrassing for you. Are you mad because I called your car a girl's car? Or is it because I see that for whatever reason you chose to not continue your higher education when a lot of others did?

I meant retirement savings should be a priority over saving for a kids college fund. If you can do both...great. But the retirement planning should come first, then figure out how much to set aside for college for the kids.
Obviously expenses to raise the child as they are younger have to be met as well.

The wife and I have a SMART savings account for our children. Kids are age 6 and 3. We also both have retirement accounts that we contribute each paycheck to.
We live modestly in a nice home, but don't have a swimming pool or expensive vehicles or dress in super expensive clothes. I don't own a boat. That's the difference. That's also where people fail, is they dump all extra income into that stuff rather than be responsible with it.

it would just eat too much of our retirement
That's a bit near sighted, are you also kicking them out of the house at 18? If they don't get firmly on their own feet you'll be paying for them in some way.
I only have $30k saved for my son, just started 6th grade, so I doubt I'll have it all covered up the time he starts...but it'll be something more than a 'you're fricked'.

Would you say all this to my face or would you rather sit behind a keyboard?
I wouldn't want to embarrass you in front of your wife.

Come down to NOLA and I'd be happy to reiterate it. They aren't fighting words.

Speaking of the tough guy behind a keyboard.

My mother did not pay for mine. Never expected her to. Why would she? After 18 anything is a huge bonus. She helped out after age 18 with splitting the cost of a $7k cat and paid me third semester of college with money from my own inheretence, which was very helpful. She also kep my room available at all times until I graduated and let me sleep on the couch of her place for two months after graduation. All of that was great, but it was not expected.
At what age does it end? If they decide to go to med school should we be expected to pay that, too. There are very good options available with low interest student loans. Not to mention you can write off the interest on taxes and it is forgiven if you die.
Today’s college age kids are much like the 4 year old child that is still being breastfed. Not necessarily their fault, but it should not be expected.
Age of entitlement and welfare is definitely here.
