There are many origins for the term "Black Friday", but one of the most common is the exact opposite of what you believe.
"By the early 1980s, an alternative theory began to be circulated: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss for most of the year (January through November) and made their profit during the holiday season, beginning on the day after Thanksgiving.[6] When this would be recorded in the financial records, once-common accounting practices would use red ink to show negative amounts and black ink to show positive amounts. Black Friday, under this theory, is the beginning of the period when retailers would no longer have losses (the red) and instead take in the year's profits (the black).[57] The earliest known use that presents the "black ink theory" appeared in the edition of November 28, 1981 of the Philadelphia Inquirer:"

quote:1. This is not true.
It means that for 364 days out of the year, the prices we pay for things are way higher than they need to be for the seller to make profit.
2. Do you understand the concept of supply/demand?
Companies exist to make money, how dare they make money!!!

A lot of people on here always hated the LSU/Arky matchup on the day after Thanksgiving and I get how it might have been a pain in the arse as far as attending the game with family in town but it was remarkably effective at insulating us from Black Friday shopping with the wives.

I don't give a shite about sales or shopping, I just like to throw down.

I realize that thread creation is the lifeblood of a message board but Jesus Christ.

Sales drive traffic increasing volume and operate to drive awareness, trial, and potentially create sticky repeat consumers. It is also a great way to manage inventory if that is a problem. There is a lot more going on than simply cutting margins.

In other words, black Friday is an admission on the part of sellers that they are artificially keeping the cost of living way too high except for a few days a year called when for some reason they decide to show that they can get by charging way less than they do.
We call those few days "sales"
You are 100% correct man. It's a rip off. I've stopped eating. I'm going on a hunger strike from now until Black Friday to protest this. Are you with me?

Last weekend I went into a Best Buy for the first time in a couple of years. They deserve to be put down. My son got a new computer that he wanted to wire to the modem and 50 ft of Ethernet cord was $40 at Best Buy. $5.99 on Amazon.
You do realize that physical retailers can't survive on selling 50' of ethernet for $5.99, right? Amazon often sells at or below wholesale cost.

Your reasoning is dumb as hell, and I don't even know where to begin telling you that you are wrong.

Yeah. I don't feel sorry for Best Buy at all. It's been an open secret for years that they sell TVs with a low profit margin to dumb people and screw them on over-priced, high margin accessories.
Their floor staff is awful. They lie to non-tech savvy people for a living.

Yeah, it's going to cost more in a store, but I'm calling complete bullshite on this story.

Like everyone else said, you're a dumb dick.

Surely you don't make a profit in your line of work.

You've never heard the term loss leader? Usually you're the first one defending our greedy capitalist overlords.

Go to Bestbuy.com. A 50' Ethernet cord is $30 on their website. It was $34 on the rack at their store.
I stood right there and ordered a 50' cord for $5.99 on Amazon.
