Is the OT happy these days?

quote:

Happiness is a relative concept, but an annual index that tracks it in countries around the world has found that the United States and some Western European countries are falling in overall well-being because younger people are feeling less and less happy.

The U.S., in particular, dropped out of the top 20 for the first time, falling to 23rd place from 15th last year, driven by a large drop in the well-being of Americans under 30. The age disparity is stark: The U.S. ranks in the top 10 for those over 60, but for those under 30, it ranks 62nd, pulling down the overall score.

The report tracks trends in well-being rather than causes, but one of the editors of the report told NBC News that a myriad of factors, including economic inequality between generations in the U.S., are likely to blame for the low levels of happiness in American youth.

This makes the U.S., along with a handful of other countries, such as Canada, Germany and France, the global outliers — the report found that in many regions of the world, the young are still happier than the old.

The findings, announced Wednesday to mark the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness, are part of the World Happiness Report, which has been tracking well-being ratings around the world for more than a decade. It’s based on data collected by the research company Gallup and analysis by well-being academics led by the University of Oxford in the U.K.

quote:

This year, Finland remained on top of the list, and was followed by Denmark, Iceland and Sweden. The lowest happiness scores were registered in war-ravaged Afghanistan.

The consistently high performance of Scandinavian nations is likely down to “a high sense of contentment” and high levels of trust in the society, De Neve said.

“They are obviously wealthy nations," he added. But more than the high gross domestic product per capita, he said, wealth is also equally distributed, “they are amongst the most equal societies, so everybody benefits from the wealth that also underpins a welfare state, which provides psychological stability.”

I love my country. I just have to say that I’m not totally surprised at this. One of the main reasons being we incarcerate more people than anywhere else on the planet. Downvote away, but it’s true.

They are also very homogeneous, but more importantly, very...snowy.

Rising crime rates don't help

I was more leaning towards the fact that we as a country lean more towards the punitive instead of rehabilitation. Especially when it comes to drug offenders.

Sure, but that’s an end result, not a cause. We have disproportionate levels of crime for a first world country, largely due to culture and the mix of cultures within our country

Those countries prioritize well-being and balance over the rat race of America.

America is awesome if you can find work that provides you financial freedom while also giving you the time off that the Nordic countries give their employees.

We just have more people that work shitty service jobs and they drag our score down.

The expectations of many these days far exceed what reality can afford. IMO, that gap is what creates masses that are ungrateful unappreciative. Many act like teenagers going though puberty their whole lives.

Probably has to do with distribution of wealth. America is more right skewed in wealth vs Nordic countries and therefore majority are unsatisfied comparing themselves with others who have a lot more

A quick trip to the Poli Board shows that we might still be ranked too high.

The average American gets 14 days vacation per year and their work still contacts them during said vacation days. They also practice DST which is directly related to bitching on the OT.

Finland remained on top of the list, and was followed by Denmark, Iceland and Sweden.

all of which are literally almost 100% NON diverse for example Finland is 91% Finnish and Denmark is 89% Danes..very little "anything else" they need diversity to be happier! Oh and each has less than 1% African descent. Seem like racist places to me!

Denmark is a wonderful country and I’ve come to the conclusion that they function so well because they aren’t diverse whatsoever.
