You still in? Rate? I knew several that were still in the Cole from precom but none that were killed. We were actually scheduled to refuel in Aden, as we were leaving to return home, but we were going to Perth Australia. They were worried about fuel so we were to just have an Oiler meet us to refuel at sea enroute. We had just transisted the straits and were in holiday routine when the CO came over 1MC announcing the bombing. We turned around and spent an extra month in the Gulf.

The only thing I specifically remember about the embassy bombings was listening to some news talk about it on WJBO, and how Clinton firing some cruise missiles in response was wagging the dog regarding the Monica situation.

That's the missile in the Sudan pharmaceutical plant.

"Intelligence" stated it had VX nerve gas

The US gets away with some shite. If Iraq or Iran had done that there would have been hell to pay.

Kinda like bombing the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. Old maps!

I was on a DDG in the Persian Gulf, we hauled arse out of the straits and launched tomahawks into suspected terrorist training camps off of pakastain into Afghanistan.

I was on an SSN in the IO. Got spinup orders but never received launch authorization.

Clinton got railroaded when he ordered the strikes on Al Qaeda in 98. It made him a little trigger shy for the rest of his administration....pussy

Clinton tried to act tough and shot some missiles to distract from his blowjob problems. But if the dumbass would have taken out Osama people would have forgotten about his problems completely.

Osama was a big name by 98. He was known well before 9/11. He came out in the late 90s and called for no distinction between the American government and civilians and said killing any American is fair game due to being complicit by paying taxes. Before that he only targeted the government and troops due to our presence in Saudi Arabia following the Gulf War.

Internet, while most people had it, was still sort of a novelty. Most people were still on dial-up. People didn't use it to get news. E-mail was just starting to become more common. AOL instant messenger was also becoming very popular.

ETA: I totally read that wrong.

From memory, it was big news for a day or two. The MSM makes a bigger deal out of the latest accusation against Trump now.

This story is another example of how much smart phones have changed the world. The bombings were a big deal and they were covered by media but it was hard to judge the level of the event as it was a bit before photos and video appeared on TV. Now, they have streaming video from someone with a phone seconds after the event. Back then, they had to get a satellite truck over there to the scene.

I don't think it was either. Probably because getting images and reporters to those areas was difficult back in those days.

Really?

you mean way back in 1998 when they needed to row across the Atlantic ocean?

It was a top 10 news story for the year for sure, along with the events in the Balkans, Good Friday Accord in Ireland, creation of the Euro, Russian economy collapse, India becoming a Nuclear power, Operation Desert Fox, Pinochet's arrest, Lewinsky Scandal.

I don’t recall it being such a big deal. Terrorism just didn’t hit the same pre-911

What's odd to me is how little discussion there is about the 1993 WTC bombings. Clinton did NOTHING about that. Thre is an EXCELLENT book on all of this titled "Losing Bin Laden" that details out how Clinton basically avoided this issue for his entire 8 years.

You can get snarky all you want but internet access and local stations with satellite capability was still spotty in the 3rd world at that time.

Images came out immediately but in today's journalism, you'd have a reporter doing a live feed from the location within minutes of the attack

Bingo. We had some local terrorism like Oklahoma City and I don't remember much about the first WTC bombing, but terrorism always seemed to be something I'd see in a movie and never seemed like a real threat to be worried about.
