The stupidity of World War I

Seriously....is there another war in history that gets as lampooned and as made fun of as the First World War? The whole thing seemed rather pointless and stupid.

The problem with World War One was of flexibility. Flexibility of politicians and flexibility of armies. The Germans had planned the war out so thoroughly that they had no choice but to invade Belgium, bringing Britain into the war.
There is a reason why it was called the lost generation. It was traumatic. There was such of feeling of betrayal by the young men who went to fight. The British military hired beautiful women to walk the streets to shame men who weren't enlisted. They drove pre-teens to enlist. There was a lot of talk after the war of the hate the soldiers felt towards the women who tricked them.

And this is valid analysis - to a degree, it should not have been a surprise to anyone who was paying attention over the previous 50 years.
The U.S. Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War exposed the folly of Napoleonic tactics in the face of rifled muskets, repeaters, increasingly lethal artillery munitions, all working in defense of a good stout slit trench. The fact that someone won those wars seems to have blinded the continent to the staggering costs in manpower those victories (and losses) extracted.
War World I - not so much a dress rehearsal as a preview or "milk run" for WWII - introduced over the horizon field artillery, modern machine guns, more advanced communications to make the trenches even better and more coordinated - pushed the advantages even more in the column of the defense and - with the same, relatively direct offensive tactics - merely a few evolutionary steps from Gustavus Adolphus (300 years hence) and almost unchanged from Napoleon at Austerlitz some 100 years past - at least things started to change fairly quickly towards the end of WWI. All of the seeds of modern, maneuver warfare were sewn in the effort to break the trench war stalemate.

In a way. In a way, not. The UN is a forum of countries. It's a chance for them to all get togeather and discuss shite. Resolutions are opportunity for setting the record.
