But when adjusted for population size, it isn't quite as impressive as a drop as it looks. Still a drop though. If only they could get it under 100 a year.

Yep. Two years post Katrina the murder rate was at 91. It is now at 40.

The point is, the optics are getting better for New Orleans. For a city dependent on tourism, that’s huge.

But is crime in general down across the board? Sure, murders could be down, but that doesn't mean robbery and other violence isn't happening.

Yep. NOLA has its share of crime, but has definitely been on the upswing the past 10 years

So, according to your post, taking down statues made people murder each other less? Is that what you mean?

I enjoy that you quoted the othe half that stated “not pretending it’s related” like a half page prior and then are quoting this half now.

Okay, you're right, even though there was absolutely no ulterior motive behind breaking up the post. I guess I was reading too fast and missed the first part. No matter, I suppose the question is too beneath you given the circumstances of when it was posted in the thread. Forgive my asking. You can carry on with your false assumptions which you've interjected multiple times now. I don't see any point really to abstaining, its a simple question with a simple answer, or so I thought.

And that's still astronomical.....
Yeah it's a decrease from what it was. That's great. But to act like it's a victory when Nola is still one of the murder capitals of the nation is just silly.

It'll be a victory when Nola is no longer on the short list for title of murder capital of the nation.

And I love the city and Ive never been scared walking down the streets there. But let's call a spade a spade. Nola has a violent crime problem, and a 10% drop in fatal shootings when the amount of shootings is roughly the same isn't a victory. It is luck.

Do you realize the number of people in New Orleans at any given time?

This board is obsessed with New Orleans. Only if some of these rural retards lived in a city worth talking about.

Pre Katrina 400-450k

Post Katrina 200-250k

Now. About 300-350k.

And Nola has been a top contender for "murder capital of the us" throughout that entire period.

It's at least triple that once tourists are factored into that number. Almost 11 million visited the city last year

Uhhhhhh... Yeah. I mean that last week of mardi gras maybe. The city doesnt have a 3:1 ratio of tourist to locals on any given day brochacho.

Edit- also, gun violence isn't typically used on tourist... It's more of a local on local thing.

Just saying that once you factor in all people in the city the chances of being a victim of crime is minuscule

It's luck when nola was on pace for a 70% (!!!) increase in shootings through the first 3rd of the year, but then closed out only up 3%?

It's luck when every month from July to December had a fewer murders than a year ago?

One or two months? Sure that could be an anomaly. 6 straight months of drastically lower incidents of shootings and murders? That ain't luck.

Smdh.

Year 1- 600 shootings 150 deaths
Year 2- 600 shootings 140 deaths.
(Example numbers pulled from thin air)
Doesn't matter that 10 fewer people "died" when there were damn near the same amount of shootings. The LUCK I was referring to is how we are LUCKY that the shooters killed fewer people despite having relatively the same amount of shootings.

If the amount of actual shootings remains about the same, then any decrease in fatal shootings IS luck.

If 20 people were robbed for $5000 total last month, but this month 20 people were robbed for only $4000, you still have a robbery problem. Doesn't matter if the amount of money stolen is lower If the number of incidents remain relatively unchanged.

But it's not about the total number in this thread. The question asks whether or not anything changed after the statues were taken down.

Obviously the statue removal has no real effect on crime, but the fact is, crime dropped dramatically AFTER the statues were removed. Both in terms of 2017 and 2016 numbers.

I don't understand how you can say a 6 month streak of dramatically reduced shootings and murders is nothing but luck.

By your logic, it was just "bad" luck that murders and shootings were so high to start the year.

Because it's lucky that more that were shot didn't die.... That is luck. They were lucky they didn't receive fatal wounds.

I'm not saying that the lower amount of murders/shootings in the second half of the year is luck. I'm saying that were lucky that more didn't die. Reading comprehension.

Uhhhhhh nope. You just need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

Edit- also the crime statistics for 2017 have not been released so we don't know if crime was lower or not. All we know is there were relatively the same amount of shootings, with relatively fewer deaths. For all we know assault/theft/etc went up.
