The statue of Admiral Raphael Semmes in Mobile, Al has been removed.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson, in a string of messages sent on Twitter, said he ordered the removal. The decision to take down the statue wasn't about Semmes or the monument itself, “and it is not an attempt to rewrite history,” he wrote.
“Moving this statue will not change the past. It is about removing a potential distraction so we may focus clearly on the future of our city,” Stimpson said.
The city would not say where the statue had been taken or what would be done with it, and it didn’t rule out the possibility that it would be returned to its original location.
here is an old photo of it not long after the Bankhead Tunnel was completed I think?

His name was on a street on LSU campus and was renamed to something else. I knew the street, but I honestly didn’t know who he was or what he did at the time. This stuff is so stupid and I’m sure this stuff will recycle as like 500 years from now, someone will start tearing down statues of famous black people for some reason.

The destruction of century old art to appease a momentary gripe of some lynch mob is a travesty.

I don't think they destroyed it. They are just moving it.

Really sad that they’re erasing our racial history
All the minorities get their own month why can’t poc (people of confederacy) get one?

A lot of folks were angry that it got removed during the middle of the night.
but what does that have to do with anything?
the decision was already made.

I think that is a fair statement.

Not even that long. The South will be majority Hispanic by the end of the century and they don't particularly like black people too much. They'll find a reason to remove MLK from everything.

he had been a serving officer in the United States Navy from 1826 to 1860.
He was a decorated and honored naval commander for over 30 years and then he defended his home state in a massive bloody civil war.
I guess erase him from memory.
Because if we forget our past and all of our mistakes and history we never have to learn a lesson or evaluate our present.
