Havent read this thread, but has the thread brought out any River Pilots to defend this scam?

I love people defending the "skill" involved.
The average neurosurgeon salary is 380k, probably requires slightly more training and skill than river piloting.

The qualifications are still met by the relatives.
I've met two river pilots in my life. One was very, very intelligent. His son, who got the job through genetics, was a complete retard. So, by my small sample size, I can surmise that half of the river pilots are retards.

Thatmakessense is an old money river pilot I think. Jones came in here trying to deflect to the Texas river pilot mafia

The first link the comes up on google features a young fresh 10th grade dropout with a dwi and drug charges who just became a pilot. His dad is a pilot.

Yeah a lot of it's been that way for ever, we all aren't related we've hired a couple who have no family connections, and you try to do it.

In their defense marine is a tight knit industry as a whole. Its also a shitty one who most want nothing to do with. The money aint free. Nobody wants to go work in a shipyard and many of these pilots at some point in their life probably have.

fair enough, but that doesn't explain how so many candidates would only be relatives or why the ones hired are either relatives or somehow tied to the LRPA.
also, a job can be posted somewhere, and still not really advertised.
The fact that the majority of the river pilots comes from families of river pilots is just common sense. There is really no point in even advertising open positions, how many people walking around today without a job are even remotely qualified to be a river pilot? If you went to LSU and surveyed the current graduating class 99.9% would not know what a river pilot was, much less any idea of how to be come one.

Isn't this redundant? River pilot = Old money, as all river pilots get the job through genetics.

Well, I have well over 4000 hours at sea as a captain on boats. Yes, one has to be just about born in the field. FACT.

A guy at work has been there quite a bit longer than me. He told me a story a couple weeks ago about a pilot coming off a ship absolutely trashed. He said the other person in charge wrote up a huge report and called the pilot company and coast guard and everything. The coast guard came out and ripped the pages out of the record book we keep and nothing ever happened to him. These dudes have some insane reach. They're pretty much untouchable and will undoubtedly get any raise they wish.

I wanna see a River Pilot use this logic when selecting a Pediatrician. You can't go find the BEST pediatrician in Greater New Orleans. You have to go find one related to the Pediatrician you had as a child b/c that pediatrician knows your family and probably told his son/niece/nephew all about your family's medical history.
So it's not a problem that he's only 33 yrs old and a Resident. His daddy told him everything he needed to know about your kid's body.
How fricking stupid does that sound?
The analogy is not accurate, a similar comparison of the river pilot selection process to medicine would be at the medical school admissions process, and there are many similarities..
If two students apply to medical school with similar GPAs and MCAT scores, they are in competition for the last available seat, if one of them had a parent that was a physician that one is going to get selected over the one that did not. Often even if the applicant with a physician parent had slightly lower scores they will usually be selected over the one that did not. The admissions committee know that if someone grew up with a parent that was a physician they understand the demands a realities of the profession, and choose that career knowing that. My wife was on a medical school admissions board for many years.
