My son played tons of baseball all over, it was time consuming. But guess what happened, not much until he hit 14-16 when he got strong as shite and while a really good youth player, he has seen his skills improve due to just being stronger and more mature.
My other boy was not a good player, played rec ball and local tournaments. Wanna guess what happened to him, he turned 14, got some coordination and got big and strong, and while not a good player he has improved dramatically, and should enjoy his last baseball season which will be Jr High baseball.
Keep you kids involved, let them be challenged a little, and time will take care of a very large portion of it. Sorry for the unpopular opinion.
yep..let them play the game as long as possible.
every family has to decide their commitment level though both time wise and money wise.
also need to understand that it might affect their ability to make the HS team.
as long as everyone understands that...all good.
not every kid needs to play travel. if they just want to play for fun, there are rec leagues for that.

Thank you for your perspective on how things happen in the small slice of the country you're familiar with. Now consider that things may work differently in other areas of the country where there are more people in general and more people with more disposable income.
My son got involved in a few showcases and tryouts, quite frankly looked like shite at his first two...the last couple he probably outperformed his ability, just did great. The JCs and D2s schools came out of the woodwork. The D1 offers, even at SunBelt schools are damn hard to come by for position players nowadays. The guys getting those...those are the kids at the national events, with pretty rare exception.

Rec ball
One big problem with small town rec ball is that the talent is watered down. A lot of the advanced players are playing travel exclusively. I'm all for giving all the kids an opportunity but its hard for the other kids to get reps while every 5th pitch is a strike.

This is always an entertaining thread. Keep it going!

Whatever happened to league play on Tuesday and Thursday nights?

You better hope your daughter doesnt get into equestrian (especially English) $3k is a partial payment for a month. Most expensive sport on the planet.

You’re just trying to do everything you can to make these dreams come true for your child,” Rector said. “But it’s just so money-driven.”
That’s the problem. Most of these “select” leagues are just pay to play money making schemes. Gulf Shores must have 16 “World Series” tourneys each summer.
Most of those kids don’t “love” the game either. It’s just an activity.

why does it being called a world series bother so many people?

umm the kids at the higher levels absolutely do because if they didnt...they would be left behind quickly

ETA: the burn of rec sports hurts too. My 2 oldest are playing basketball, that was $350 sign up fee. 2 younger are playing soccer and baseball rec in spring, another $365. We will spend over 1k this year on rec sport sign ups for 3 kids.
Exactly or bout?
Anyway, if your rec league is charging that kind of money, something is f’d.

Is the league training and paying coaches with that? Could make sense if so.

My nephew played flag football early in the fall. Not travel ball. Its a rec league.. But they asked the parents to pay $150 when it had been $50 in the past, to help pay for uniforms and to pay refs. They played 5 games.
Then as parents got to talking during the season, it was learned that not everyone had to pay an entry fee. A parent confronted someone who was running the league to ask about it and they were told "well that's why we asked the parents who can afford to pay to pay $150. To help the families who can't so their kids didn't have to be left out".
Its a money grab in every direction, which is really sad because when rec ball is costing $150 for 5 flag football games. They sell small, like the size of a small back of chips, bags of popcorn for $3.50. For a small drink and a small popcorn its $7.50. I just heard someone complain about it, that's the only reason I know this. I know that isn't nearly as much as $3k, but these people are trying to get every nickel they can out of parents.

My favorite are the parents standing outside of grocery stores with buckets asking for donations for their travel ball team. If you can't afford it...find something else to do.
100%. Lady we know asks folks on Facebook for donations for her 8 year old daughter to do cheer so she can pay for fees and uniforms. She sold squares for a Cowboys game to take her daughter to a cheer competition in Florida. No freaking shame whatsoever.
We’ve never participated in team fundraisers for our kids because we chose to allow them to play knowing the fees. It’s our responsibility, not our family and neighbor’s responsibility.

It was actually exact
Basketball - 2 kids @ $175
Spring baseball and soccer - 2 kids soccer $165, baseball $200.

Little League is much cheaper. If your kid is good enough for The Show, it won't matter where he plays, or with whom.
