Sure, but that's more a brand saturation deal of a rather simple commodity good (Q tips, Jello, etc.) than the situation of basically every random person thinking it's the preeminent "best" brand of a particular specialty good, where there are innumerable other available brands of the same good.
It's brand created proliferation of the market versus brand created exclusivity.
I feel like Rolex is almost wholly unique in that regard, in that a small percentage of the population own or will ever purchase a Rolex, but a massive percentage of the population will still tell you it's the "best" watch if you were to ask them.

Back in the day when you could walk into a store and walk out with what you wanted, I had my eyes set on a GMT 16710. Never pulled the trigger.
In 2019 I got the itch again and started looking for a Rolex when my $150 Tommy Bahama watch (which got complimented on frequently) shite the bed. I got weird vibes at a couple of dealers and heard about “allocated” pieces. I had no idea they had changed their business model.
Anyway, I didn’t care for the newer GMTs and bought a new Sub from a gray dealer. I don’t regret it. I see my watch in the used watch section of brick and mortar stores going for several thousand more than what I paid.
I bought a Tudor Pelagos in April and once I got used to the titanium bracelet I like it almost as much as the Sub.
A dealer in town recently opened up a Rolex boutique and my wife bought a Datejust from them on her first visit after being waitlisted at another dealer in town and not “getting the call” for over a year.

Not bad (I'm jealous), this is my small little piece of heaven I have tucked away in a corner. (Not including my cleaning machine, many shelves of tools, and multiple solvents in the garage).

And I completely agree with this.. As I said in my post on the first page, Rolex watches/movements are some of the best from a watchmaker standpoint to work on. And when done properly, Rolex will keep better time then almost every other mechanical watch out there.

did the 24 hour test and it's 5 seconds fast so pretty good - I'll probably stop by Watch Masters and just chat w/ them about cost of a service but will most likely just wait for now
