The man should pay for the first dinner, period. The woman should make a sincere offer but it shouldn't be serious. It's a way of showing you are a reasonable woman. I would never go to a super nice place on a first date anyway that's just stupid, it's not a good atmosphere for a first date for one.
Now anything after dinner like drinks or a movie is great for the girl to split or pay.

I've been on a lot of first dates in the last few years. Never once has a woman reached for the check. In fact, they almost never pay on any date. I just accept it as the way it is. No big deal. It would be nice if they grabbed maybe 1 check out of every 10 or so.

When I go out with my girlfriend, I usually pay for our dates. When she decides to cook, I will buy the groceries. My thinking is that she is a woman who is a good friend for life. I'm not looking for a payback. She supports me in other ways besides financially. If I marry her, my paycheck will become our paycheck.
