Bookmarked. I might be looking for a new car in a few months if I can move out of New York.

All you have to do is research. Decide your price and stick to it. Not hard at all.

people always think that the bottom line price is what they are paying for the car. poor stupid. unless you're paying cash, that's not the bottom line. ask, "what am I gonna pay for this car when I make my last payment".

that's the real bottom line.

Do your research, pick the vehicle and features you want, search the internet for pricing, decide the max you are going to spend for what you want, go to dealer, let them tell you the price of the vehicle you want, if it’s not what you want, about face and go down the road to the next shop.

Even with that alot of people get sucked into extended warranties, rim protection, etc. Alot of money is made in the finance room.

The car buying process is so antiquated. All this money spent on the showrooms and the actual process is from the 1950’s.

I read most of that crap and some of it’s pretty good. However, the dealers are aware of this so they usually now will just let you walk.

Beware of internet sites (ie cars, autobytel, autotrader etc). I found the exact vehicle I was looking at 589 miles away. Called the dealership and told them sold. The price BEFORE tax was $5,000 more than the advertised price. Reason was I lived in Louisiana.

I finally just called my local dealership and told them theirs wasn’t my top pick but it would do. Told them I would write them a check for $XXXXX. Picked it up yesterday no hassle no bullshite.

I absolutely hate that carnival circus that some dealers have. Sign here if I can get you the price will you buy today ... etc, or please don’t leave my sales manager will fire me for letting you go ... Those places border on false imprisionment in my opinion.

When I bought my current car (2016 Mustang GT) I used the TrueCar service.
I spec'ed out what I wanted on my car and the local dealers gave a price, and the service sent me the best 3.
The dealer I preferred had the third best price. I told them they were 3rd best so they knocked off another $800 to match the best.
We had the car ordered, I went in to get it when it came in, and left a happy car buyer knowing I had got about as good a deal as I could get.
Very easy. No body was jerking me around, trying to pull tricks.

p.s.: I still love my mustang. great car for the dollar.

As long as you buy something you can afford what's the problem? I drove my last one for 12 years and will probably do the same with the new one I just purchased.

I bet you are the type who says that a car loses 40% of it's value the minute you drive off the lot.

It’s also not the best way to buy a new car.

The Will Cover method is a HUGE waste of time. Once you know which car you want, you shouldn’t have to step foot inside a dealership until it is time to pick up your car. The best way to negotiate is to play several dealers against each other, and this is much more easily done online. I’ve bought my last 5 cars in the last 5 years doing this. And the best deals are rarely local unless you live in a large city like Dallas, Houston, Atlantta, etc. Volume dealers usually give much better deals. On my Vette I got around $6K more off than the “best” local deal. On my Jag I got around $10K more off than the “best” local deal. A local dealer with 5 or 6 of a particular model on the lot is not going to compete with a dealer that has 50 on the lot.

You should NEVER have to walk away because you shouldn’t even be in the dealership in the first place unless it is to test drive a car.
