As long as we have all been alive, cars have been a big part of our life. We use them every day to get where we need to go. We probably don’t think much about them much except when we’re in the market to buy a new one.

I think most would agree that the invention of the automobile is one of humanity’s greatest inventions. It literally changed the world and how we live.

My question today is, or the paradox is, while cars have changed our life, motor vehicle accidents have also claimed millions of lives all around the world since the invention.

Do you think the car still deserves the title of one of man’s greatest achievements, even though so many lives have been lost? Is it just an unfortunate reality that no matter what, people were going to possibly die while driving a car?

Greatness isn't without drawbacks. Trains derailed, but allowed the U.S. to expand across the great plans. Jets crash, but made damn near the entire world accessible. Medications have side effects that kill people every year, but save so many more.

Think about ambulances. The auto probably saves more lives than it kills.

Life has risks and I think the invention of the automobile has helped many, many more people than have died due to them. Also…humans drive to em, so some blame has to be put on us.

With most great advances there will be drawbacks. Jets, trains are also examples as well as pharmaceutical and medical advancements.

The percentage of astronauts that died in the Apollo program is exponentially higher than the percentage of people that have died in car accidents.

Was man on the moon not a great achievement?

How many lives where saved by a car or ambulance and the ability to get someone to medical care quicker in an emergency and over a long distance for urgent or maintenance care?

Why is this a paradox? Should we just wrap ourselves in bubble wrap for protection from life? We shouldn't have planes because they sometimes crash, or ships because they sink. No trains, either, or even bicycles for that matter. Put your mask back on and be quiet.

If a twin took off from Earth very fast in a car, then came back, he would be younger than his identical twin left behind.

Famine and starvation was common before advances in agriculture.

Those same advances have resulted in widespread obesity and diabetes.

Was it worth it? Uh... Yes

Cars kill very few people. Dumb asses on their phone or DUI kill lots of people.

Or just the ability to get someone to a hospital who was injured, sick, having a reaction. Think back in the day how many women, newborns, etc died in childbirth because they had no doctor or hospital to get to in a hurry

I'll take it a step further and bring up the disadvantages of the automobile. Life moves faster, people could spread out and travel further to work or move away, how did that affect the concept of family, the average person's happiness, health? Introduced fast food etc...Are we really better off than we were? Maybe the Amish are on to something.

Yep. And their phones too. Ted Kaczynski tried warning people 40+ years ago yet here we are.
