That was the way we dressed pretty much daily running around the deserts of Arizona and southern Nevada.

We spend 2-3 weeks a year in Utah and I’ll throw an unbuttoned flannel on over a t shirt during the day. Come at me

My favorite is the “TV trucker” who always wears the flannel shirt, bubble vest and trucker hat. It’s a look never actually seen in the wild.

almost everyday from 96 to 2003

It’s clear, you’re fricking stupid.

Actually that style was very popular in the 1950's and 60's on the west coast. The flannel shirt was referred to as a Pendleton (that was the main manufacturer of the lined flannel shirt. The T-shirt could or couldn't have a pocket but was always white. The pants were Levis blue jeans but referred to as "Pegged Pants" and the shoes were either Keds or Converse tennis shoes. Pegged pants were simply pants that your mom would stitch up skin tight like the pants millennials wear today. So yes styles do repeat.
The shirts were very comfortable to wear, the pants, not so much. How do I know all this, well I used to wear them daily.

You strike me as the kind of guy who tucks his t-shirt into his jeans.

The open flannel shirt with a t-shirt underneath look
I used to double the fashion by wearing my pants open with my Fruit-of-the-Looms showing underneath.
But everyone was all,
"This is a workplace!"
and
"We've discussed this."
and
"Good God he's not wearing underwear."

Late 60's it was the signature look of John Fogerty. Even with the hot, humid weather, we were wearing flannels in south Louisiana because of CCR.

that was my casual look in the 70s, not because of anyone I was trying to imitate, just, as someone pointed out, cool enough out for sleeves but not quite cool enough for a jacket, also, Neil Young says hi

Was just in Alaska and Pendeltons over t shirts were happening.

I don’t notice people wearing this in real life,
Cause it's still hot as hell on the Gulf Coast.

You've never thrown on a heavier outer shirt, on top of a t-shirt, when it was little chilly but didn't warrant a jacket?
They got these things called sweaters
