This might be a shock for you, but 80% of the English words are "borrowed" from another language.

It may be surprising to hear from me, but...no and yes. It's a bit of a pidgin. Not altogether different from what English was (old, middle and modern) seen as (*psst-vulgar) when Latin and French were the language of court.

I very much recommend "The History of English Podcast". Especially the episodes that center around the Canterbury tales. Lovely bit of lingual transition there
