Fine but you suggest he should have to.

It was a big deal for a 5 year old

Wait a minute. The battle of Guadalcanal ended in 1943. If he was in that bad of shape they would have sent him home after since he couldn’t be serving at 85 lbs. The war ended in 45 anyway. So say the story takes place in 46 or 47. You were 5 then? That means you were born around 42 during the war. You are 76 years old and posting on the OT?

No. He never got over that island. I have his pics from Guadalcanal. Some show dozers pushing piles of corpses into trenches. Others show bodies piled on the wire. Can't imagine what it was like. PTSD was not even a term back then.

Only when he was drinking and only to my grandmother. He would get to drinking, take his box of pictures out and pour it on. My Grandmother told him she burned his pics to try to curb it. It didn't. I found them in the bottom of her back bedroom closet after she died. Have them in my safe now.

You are fricken delusional. An accountability group my arse.
They were nothing more than ignorant, hateful dregs of society.
Don't try to justify any of their actions as Nobel.

This rant should be IN NO WAY be interpreted to absolve the Klan of racism, it's just to serve notice to today's minorities that you don't know what true oppression is There was a time it cost you something other than a hurt, over-inflated, ego and you don't necessarily have to be black to understand it.

But, but, but the statues. That’s what is holding them back. The statues make them rob and kill each other. It’s not that they are pussies - it’s those damn statues.

Grandpa was a saw sharpener who went to
Miss.looking for work.
Grandpa drank a bit and the KKK showed up at his front door. Grandma saved
his arse and they headed back to La. They're a combination of the Nazis
and the Harper Valley PTA
No moral lessons here other than stay away from Mississippi.

This is an interesting story (OPs)...

I remember my grand dad speaking of his grand dad watching the last man being hung in Leesville for being a vagrant. I said the same thing you are thinking...WHAT? He said, yeah, after the civil war when a stranger came to town and stayed a while....if something bad happened people would blame the vagrant. Quick trial, and hanging, and the bible verse about cutting down the barren fruit tree. Rough times

Guadalcanal was a bitch to fight in, the navy had to essentially pull out for a short period of time, and the guys had to fight to live. What did he do in the navy that would require him to be put ashore? I know the Marines had a bitch of a time , and the naval battles were one of the biggest of all time.

God Bless Your Granddaddy. War is hell. My wife had an uncle survived an ambush in Vietnam. He was a truck driver and the Viet Cong ambushed their convoy. All the men he was carrying were killed in the ambush. He hid under the truck and somehow miraculously survived. He spent the rest of his life drinking heavy. I mean heavy.

Met another guy. A former U. S. Army Paratrooper. Was sent in to rescue another unit pinned down by North Vietnam Army Regulars and Viet Cong. All the men in that unit were killed and when he landed they ambushed his unit and killed ALL the men in his unit as well, except him. He was the ONLY one who survived. Spent an entire month evading the Viet Cong looking for him. Lived off what he could get off the bodies of his dead buddies. Amazing how he survived. That's another story....his survival. Had a really bad case of PTSD. As you can imagine.

War is hell. Pray for Peace. I pray your granddad is resting and at peace. Lord knows he deserves it.

Vietnam....what a waste!

The real moral of the story is:

YOU CAN’T TRUST THE SYSTEM!
