My wife and I spent about 10-15 years traveling the Caribbean. We have been all over there. Since we have moved to Florida, we have not taken any vacations. I remember that day you are talking about. The day and night before were always awesome
We had a tradition to get to the airport a hour earlier than we needed to so we could eat a shitty $30 breakfast at the airport.
Fun times

Ha. Not in the Prez household.
I went on a trip with my wife in May. I got a hotel room at the airport so I could make her finish packing and not stay up til 1am before our 6am flight.

It’s stressful trying to finish work, pack, and then hard to sleep because you don’t wanna miss your alarm. If you’re a kid, sure, it’s great.

This. I’m usually too excited to sleep well and I like to hit the road early so the kids will go back to sleep in the car for a little bit.

I kept seeing your thread title and thinking it looked like the name of an Adam Sandler song so I decided to prompt chatgpt with a premise based on the themes in this thread. It did not disappoint.
Behold: The Night Before Vacation (by AIdam Sandler)
Behold: The Night Before Vacation (by AIdam Sandler)
quote:
(Verse 1)
Well, it's the night before vacation, and I'm feelin' fine,
But I can't help but laugh at this whole packing line.
My wife's got suitcases stacked ten feet high,
And the kids' toys keep pilin' up to reach the sky.
(Pre-Chorus)
They pack their favorite clothes and shoes,
And a hundred things they'll never use.
But hey, I smile and play along,
'Cause tomorrow we'll be singing a vacation song!
(Chorus)
The night before vacation, it's a packing parade,
We'll bring the kitchen sink, just in case it's mislaid.
But when we hit the beach, and the sun shines bright,
All these packing mishaps will be out of sight!
(Verse 2)
My wife insists we need three different hats,
And the kids' toys must all fit into several gigantic mats.
There's a bag for snacks and one for the beach,
And enough sunscreen to share with each coastal peach.
(Bridge)
Despite the chaos, I know it's worth it all,
'Cause vacations with my family make me feel ten feet tall.
We'll build sandcastles, play games in the sun,
And laugh together until the day is done.
(Verse 3)
Now, everything's packed, and I can finally breathe,
There's a sense of accomplishment, a bit of reprieve.
I might tease and joke, but deep down, I know,
This vacation will be one heck of a show!
(Pre-Chorus)
They packed their favorite clothes and shoes,
And a hundred things they'll never use.
(Outro)
So here we go, on this vacation escapade,
With a car full of stuff, oh, the memories we'll trade.
Laughing, bonding, under the summer sun's embrace,
The night before vacation, totally worth the chase!

I'm the guy who has everything packed at lest a couple of days prior to leaving. Yes, I pack too many shoes, because the right shoes for the activity is important to me. But I go lean on unneeded shite and can get a weeks worth of cloths in one bag.
My wife is the opposite. The closer it gets to go time, the more stressed and unable to make a decision she gets. For 14 years every vacation has started out shite because she's freaking out, snapping at me, and not prepared.
Last Christmas was the final straw. After we finally got on the road we drove in silence for about an hour. Finally I said "this is the last vacation I'm going on with you if you don't make some changes. I'm ready to turn around, go home, drop you off, and continue this trip solo."
She actually didn't attach back, but admitted that this was no fun and there had to be a change. We identified some things she could do to prevent this from happening again and she agreed to implement them.
The key was to have EVERYTHING she needed to take with her on a trip available to be packed a week before we leave. That means laundry is done, decisions are made on what she's taking, and most importantly, she has duplicates of all her makeup, hair stuff, blow dryer, all that shite, so that she can pack EVERYTHING a week before. I don't care if we have to spend money so she has two sets of makeup brushes or blush or whatever. It's a small price to pay for peace. It lets us truly have EVERY bag packed and loaded in the car the night before. All we have to do is wake up, get dressed, and go.
Next trip we did this and it was the best trip we've ever had.
I did catch her dipping in to her travel makeup a couple of weeks ago because she had run out of her home stuff. I put a stop to that shite. BUY SOME MORE for daily use. I know you, you'll use all the travel stuff and then next trip we are right back where we started!!

The duplicates thing does work. I keep a complete duplicate set in my overnight bag to make weekend trips easy. It has toiletries, a set of pajamas, allergy medicine or whatever in it, etc. and it makes packing so much easier.

Night before vacation sucks
So does morning of
It's all about then number of potential locations for things to go wrong
Good part is after the plane takes off
Or if driving, not until you get to where you're going

or tomorrow to Banff Alberta.
I don’t worry about packing much, I only go to places that have everything I need if I forget something, I’ll just buy it there.
I don’t let myself get amped up about traveling, that way I can really relax once I get there, it’s like found money.

But the afternoon/night before you leave is awesome. Everything packed, leaving at 8:30 for airport. No work for the next 7 days. Excitement. Relaxation.

The night before vacations is usually chaos in our house. The wife and daughter are major procrastinators on packing.
Same here. There's usually an argument where I ask the same question a hundred times:
"Why are you just now doing this?"

we just got back from a 3 week road trip that included 5 states, 8 concerts, 3 national parks, about 1800 driving miles and 4 flights. We shipped 1/3 of the stuff she packed home after 4 days and and another 1/3 after 12 days
I think (hope) the light is finally coming on…
traveling is so much more fun when you aren’t dragging around hundreds of pounds of stuff you don’t need nor have any intention to use or wear
