If they used the literal definitions of the amendments like they are with this issue, the 2nd amendment would allow them to have guns only for protection from the government.

That's the crux of it IMO.
What would most of those guys be doing if there was no such thing as pro football or pro sports in general? So they're shitting on the same system that has afforded them (and in most cases, also their children for generations) an extravagant lifestyle, not to mention the platform to make such a statement itself.

I respectfully disagree...
Everyone has a platform. As some have pointed out previously, if most people (if not nearly everyone...) begins to express some form of political view at their workplace it will get shut down with a quickness. Legally and without recourse.
If anyone, regardless of what they do for a living, feels the need to "protest" something and/or engage in some meaningful form of social/political activity, there are already a tremendous amount of avenues to do that with. No matter how you slice it, allowing anyone (regardless of their political/social leanings) a voice while in their work environment is a asking for trouble.
It is a losing proposition for everyone....

Again, bottom line is they are staging a political protest while they're on the job. Why is it that millionaire football players feel entitled to do this but your average Joe would never dream of doing something like that for fear of loosing their job?
Celebrities, the media, and faux-intellectuals still don't understand this is exactly the kind of thing that got Trump elected in the first place. Trump voters love Trump because he comes out and says exactly what they think in the back of their minds.

These aren't dudes that work at your plant staging a protest. These are NFL football players. The owners have a call in if they want to shut this down, and they haven't. These athletes are protesting in a way that is deemed appropriate by their boss.

Because their bosses let them do it, if your boss let's you do something like this, should a third party be able to come and say "no you can't do that?" The answer, of course, is no.
Of course at some point the reality of football fans leaving the sport in droves is going to affect these guys' bottom lines and at that point they won't be okay with it and then changes will be made.
That's actually what Trump was saying. Hurt the NFL by not giving them your entertainment dollars and these players will either stop doing this OR get fired. He wasn't advocating for anyone being forced to fire a player.

Until it starts hitting the owners in the pocketbook. It's going to be interesting to see how all this plays out. Americans love their football. Will the people who are claiming they are done with the NFL stick to their convictions? Keep the channel changed, stop paying for tickets, stop buying merchandise?

It won't...the minority that is angry rednecks will be right back to watching NFL in 2 weeks. Most other people don't care, or actually support the players on this. People who didn't even watch NFL before might start. It's cute that they all think their boycott is going to sink a billion dollar industry
