Let's say were talking liquid volume.
A 2 inch core out of the earth would take a shitload more liquid to fill than a 2 inch core out of an orange.
I know I'm apparently not getting what it's actually about, but, you know, obvious.

They aren't talking about the volume of the hole taken out. They are talking about the volume of the ring. It sounds weird but the gif in the OP does a good job showing what they mean.

Cool video. Makes sense intuitively because if you think about it taking a section of the earth only the height of a napkin - with the earth having such a huge diameter - the section you take would have almost no perceptible curvature and the slice would be almost infinitesimally thin.

What'll really bake your noodle is that a rope around a basketball a foot high off the basketball is only 6 feet longer than a rope tightly wrapped around the basketball.
Diameter of the Earth: 41,804,000 feet.
Circumference of the Earth: pi*d = 131,331,139.29 feet
Diameter of the Earth plus two feet: 41,804,002 feet
Circumference of the Earth+2: pi*(d+2) = 131,331,145.57 feet
Difference: 6.28 feet
Diameter of a basketball: 0.796 feet
Circumference of a basketball: pi*d = 2.500 feet
Diameter of a basketball+2 feet: 2.796 feet
Circumference of a basketball+2: pi*(d+2) = 8.78 feet

This threw me off as well. The illustrations darken the inside areas as well, leading me to believe they were talking about the inside of the sphere, not the outside.
The video cleared it up better.

Here's one I've always liked: if you take pi to the 39th digit, then it is accurate enough to compute the circumference of the visible universe (a diameter of about 46 billion light years) to within the width of a single Hydrogen atom.
NASA only uses 16 digits of pi in their calculations (when necessary).
