These things fascinate me. Did you know that if you had a string 6 inches off the ground wrapping all the way around the earth it would be the same length as a string wrapped around a basketball?

Not following that. What?

Still wrong, the basketball is a circle but the string has to be squared.

It makes complete sense if you’re not a dipshit. I don’t understand why this is such a revelation? It’s common fricking sense.

Thank you. For a second I thought I had something mixed up.

Nope.

Your mind might not be blowing yet, but think about the implications. If you core an orange to create a napkin ring that is 2 inches tall, it would have the same volume as if you cored the earth to create a napkin ring that was 2 inches tall. This sounds absolutely impossible, but if you check the math, you’d find that it is very true.
I'm an absolute shite stain when it comes to math but I'm still calling bullshite on that. I don't have to work out the math and get it wrong 10,000 times to know, either.

Wowzers. What are you trying to say?

I feel like I should check the math then. That don't sound right. Circumference don't matter, just the depth of the hole??
Its not the volume of the hole that is the same.
Its the ring itself.

I feel like you should check the English.
And maybe you should get your grammer right.

I think what you're looking for is the difference in length between a string 6 inches off the ground and the earth's circumference is the same as the difference between a string 6 inches off the surface of a basketball and the basketballs circumference.

I thought this thread was to lament the slow extinction of the napkin ring.
Posted on 10/30/17 at 5:30 pm to chinhoyang
I thought it was going to be some cretin complaining about using napkin rings.
What would be next? Decorative throw pillows? Placecards? Guest towels?!?

Proper guest towels, place cards, napkin rings, special milled soap for guests, calling cards, and written thank you notes are all signs of a robust and polite society.
