Not of the Southern conservative strain, no. He was a big Kennedy guy, and volunteered for Bobby's presidential campaign until his assassination. He hated most Alabama Democrats of that time though, especially George Wallace.

Opposition? I never said anything about the Republican party. But one of the guys that filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Strom Thurmond, immediately switched parties from D to R after its passage. So maybe your understanding of history is shallow here.

Would love to know what I'm confused about. You're the one that got triggered by the word "conservative" when it wasn't at all meant to reference the republican party. I'm aware of the Democratic party's history in regards to race and civil rights. I'm also aware that those attitudes had shifted by the 1960's and there were two factions within the party. A majority of the party voted in favor of the Civil Rights acts of the late 50's into the 60's.
