My dad was career military and we lived on Army bases all over the world until he retired when I was 14. We moved to a suburb and that Christmas I got my usual presents of clothes and other essentials. We grew up like this so I knew no better. Two kids on my street got brand new motorcycles for Christmas that year and it hit me that we didn’t have much in the way of money.
My mom was very frugal and made a lot of clothes for herself and my sister. She got the bright idea to make me a cowboy shirt when I was in the 6th grade. It actually looked pretty good but I reluctantly wore it to school. Right after the bell rings a girl sits down 2 rows over with a dress made from the exact same material. For some reason, I was mortified the rest of the day and when I got home I took off that shirt and hid it inside an old boot in my closet.

When the kid next door said "I got some ice cream, I got some ice cream, you didn't get none, you can't afford it, you on da welfare!"
But karma got him. He dropped his ice cream.

People with discretionary money often have it bc they choose to not buy lots of things they can “afford”. That’s how you can start snowballing money over time.

When I realized out 5000 square foot house was the smallest in our gated community.

Son if you had a dad & mom that loved you enough to feed you and put a roof over your head you weren't poor..
I knew we were poor because of this saying.
There’s nothing like being told to drink your spit because the bottle of soda in the checkout line was too expensive when I asked for it because I was thirsty.

Most people growing up prior to the 80s were relatively poor. I knew we were and appreciate the values I learned.
We weren't very rich in material things but were rich in life experience so to speak. Everyone played outside all day, watched TV on Saturday mornings for a couple hours only, had no telephones, listened to the radio, and learned street smarts. Kids today, while much better off in material riches and technology, have little to no street smarts or interpersonal communication skills. We were able to survive 5 days w/o utilities after a hurricane without thinking much about it, I don't know what kids today would do w/ themselves ?

It was Top Value stamps for us. My folks got some really good stuff with those, but it took forever to fill those books.

When I went back to the small town where I lived until I was 10 was when I realized how poor the whole town was.

Washing/Reusing Ziploc baggies wasn’t a thing.
Didn’t find that one out until highschool when I was doing the dishes with my buddy and he looked at me with a giant WTF face

This has the bonus of finding out I couldn’t basketball good as well.
Desperately searching for my teenage identity, I tried out for the Jr High team. I asked my folks to please buy me some Air Jordans.
They, of limited budget, and having seen me brick countless shots on the neighbor’s hoop offered a compromise..
At the time Montgomery Ward was still around, and they had these high tops that almost looked like Nikes but the swoosh didn’t have the little hook. Just a rounded end. It looked like a whale.
So not only did I have lack vertical, speed, accuracy or pretty much any other appreciable bball skills; I had to wear fricking Whale shoes.

My dad got paid once per month on an enlisted man’s salary and we had 6 of us in the household. Toward the end of the Month we ate a lot of tuna casserole, mac and cheese and salmon croquettes. To this day, I can’t hardly stand a casserole, m&c or salmon croquettes
We never had soda in the house or store bought cookies as they were considered a luxury. My mom baked a lot but when I went to other kids houses it was a treat to drink a coke and eat a hostess Twinkie. I was 12 before I ate at my first McDonalds and thought I had gone to paradise.

When I said to mom "Bologna sammiches again? I'm not eating that" and she said "Fine, bet you'll be hungry for them tomorrow"
That woman didn't play.
