For me it was discovering that "pizza scissors" arent a real thing and we were apparently too poor to afford a pizza cutter. Lol

Buying grocery items with the lowest price per ounce cost on that tiny tag is another one

I honestly wouldn't have known that half of the things I do are some former poor kid shite if my wife or friends didnt point them out and make fun of me. Makes me laugh when it happens.

I guess when you're a little kid you really dont grasp the concept of being poor, so there are alot of things that you carry into adulthood that you assume are normal.

Has that ever happened to anyone else?

Real Italians cut their pizza with scissors, the romans and the Napolitano for example

When the other children pointed it out. I realized I was poor when someone told me I was.

It sounds like your parents were too lazy to buy a $4 pizza cutter

The price per ounce thing is savvy, not poor. My family also used scissors instead of a pizza cutter (I feel fancy when I use a pizza cutter in my own house as an adult). We were firmly middle class.

Food Club. It’s not really a club, just a generic version of the great food my rich friends ate.

Most people growing up prior to the 80s were relatively poor. I knew we were and appreciate the values I learned.

my parents were divorced. my mom was poor and my dad rich.

so basically everything we did moms was poor

example: ordering pizza was a super treat at my moms house.

we ate at restaurants all the time at my dads

Yep. I was like "you mean, it's not normal when you go to the dump that after you dump your stuff you look around to see if there is anything useful?

Although there is poor and there is poor. My parents were able to scrape up enough to send us to Catholic school for 1-8 (Kindergarten was optional in those days), but I did have to wear school pants that had patches on patches (we played tackle everything at recess back then).

A penny saved brings you that much closer to retirement.

My wife grew up kind of lower middle class and still has a lot of those traits from her childhood. She won't go to the doctor unless it's an emergency. She stresses over spending money on things we can easily afford.

I didn't grow up poor and she still calls me a spoiled brat all the time.

When I got Gobots instead of Transformers for my birthday.

Plus when my dad used a screwdriver to start his Datsun because it cost too much to fix the ignition

Moving away and discovering that hamburger steaks and gravy with mash potatoes and a piece of bread wasn’t a high end fancy meal.

Son if you had a dad & mom that loved you enough to feed you and put a roof over your head you weren't poor.... They might have been broke and short on cash at times but you were far from poor.

Cooking navy beans on a Coleman single burner grill by candle light in a trailer was a clue.

Haha I forgot about those.

Holy hell, those are some fancy pizza scissors. We were ahead of our time in guess.

I forgot about scavenging at the dump.
