With every inch mapped and cataloged, and with ongoing population growth, it’s harder nowadays to traverse unspoiled terrain in the United States. Today over 80% of the world’s population lives within one hour of a city. In high-income countries like the United States, the percentage is more than 90%. While living near urban centers tends to bring area residents social and economic benefits, the adventurous among us may be pleased to learn there are still some corners of our country that remain extremely remote — places referred to fondly (or not) as the middle of nowhere. 24/7 Wall St. identified the location in each state with the longest estimated travel time to the nearest city using data published Jan. 10, 2018 in Nature. Travel times take into account all forms of travel, as well as the quality of transportation infrastructure.

Methodology:
quote:

To identify the middle of nowhere in every state, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the predicted travel time in minutes to the nearest city from millions of locations across the United States. The data were obtained from “A Global Map of Travel Time to Cities to Assess Inequalities in Accessibility in 2015”, published January 10, 2018 in the International Journal of Science Nature. Researchers used a geospatial model that estimated travel times from points around the world to urban centers, taking into account various modes of transportation, terrain, the quality of transportation infrastructure, and other factors affecting human movement rates.

Notable locations:
Alabama:
Terminus of Charmichael Creek (Choctaw County)
Nearest city: 2 hours 48 minutes

Arkansas:
Southeast corner of the state
Nearest city: 3 hours , 29 minutes

Georgia:
Okefenokokee NWR
Nearest city: 5 hours, 23 minutes

Florida:
East of Miccosukee Reservation, The Everglades
Nearest city: 7 hours , 39 minutes {??}

Louisiana:
Avoca Island Cutoff
Nearest city: 6 hours, 51 minutes

Tennessee:
Clark Creek terminus, Rocky Fork State Park
Nearest city: 3 hours, 8 minutes

Texas:
Southeastern-most edge of Big Bend National Park, on border of U.S. and Mexico
Nearest city: 8 hours, 1 minute

Alaska:
Amatignak Island, Aleutian Islands
Nearest city: 84 hours, 37 minutes

What is the definition of city? Avoca island is 30 min from Houma and 1.5h from New Orleans.

I couldn't see where they defined a minimum to be considered a "city".

Judging from Arkansas, it must be bigger than Little Rock and Jackson but smaller than Memphis.

the travel times make no sense at all. Is that by walking or paddleboat? You can go from Miami to Pensacola in that timeframe.

The times are bogus.

I have driven from southeast Arkansas to Memphis in way less than that.

The 84 hours from some place, Alaska is nonsense. You could drive to Juneau in that time from anywhere in the USA but Hawaii.

We built a bridge to the Aleutians?

TBH using an island as the variable is dishonest.

In the methodology they stated they took into account different modes of travel required to get there. So walking time away from roads would be included. Still may be bullshite but it made a little more sense.

I drove across the middle of Nevada once. That has to be the definition of middle of nowhere.

List is crap. I don't know what they define as a city, but Panther Swamp Refuge in Mississippi is only like 20 minutes from Yazoo City. Of that's not big enough it is about an hour and 15 minutes from Jackson. It says 4 hours 32 minutes from a city. I'll bet there are about 7-8 cities or more over 200,000 people closer than that.

The driving times for Alaska are hilarious, though.

The drive from Anchorage to Mud Bay (short ferry ride away from Juneau - you can't even get directly to Juneau by road) is 21 hours.

There aren't even really any roads leading west out of Anchorage, but if there was a theoretical road that took you all the way from the southwest tip of the Alaskan Peninsula to Anchorage, then the trip from, say, Cold Bay, AK, to Juneau, AK would be at least 40 hours and probably longer. That scale always blows my mind.

I would think that island in Louisiana isn't anywhere near that far from a city if you take a boat.
