People say it fairly often and it always bothers me that people feel the need to do this.

Some people are certainly charlatans grifting while they act in a subpar manner.

Other people feel the need to due to a lack in confidence. Maybe they don’t know everything they feel they need to. Maybe your being looked to for expertise you don’t have.

If your faking it, you are only doing a disservice to yourself. Some people will automatically see your bullshite and you may not build a solid foundation that you need if your just picking up information along the way without getting context to what your doing

Honesty is still the best policy. Show, through your hard work that you are eager, genuine, and capable. Communicate, but also have a plan.

Look, sometimes you just have to pull out, Moan and spit on their back okay?

It makes them feel better

The saying your woman uses is “make it til you fake it.”

I fake it every day of my life. If people really knew how dark my mood usually is and how bad I feel they'd run away. I know this because I've tried telling people about it and it doesn't work. So yeah I fake it and I'll continue to fake it.

Fake it til you make it typically applies to attitudes, not activities that require a level of skill.

It's appropriate applied to skilled people in new environments that will succeed in time with patience.

That's the appropriate usage of the phrase.

I'd rather just be surly, speak my mind to a fault, and just do the work.

I think that all depends on what you’re faking.

FITYMI is bad advice to give and take unless it’s your own advice to yourself. Some people have the confidence knowing they will make it, realizing they will have to struggle at first.

Everyone has to do this at some point. If you don’t have experience and don’t know what you’re doing, well you better at least act like you know what you’re doing.

I think you are taking things too literal. You don't fake everything until you make it, but lets say there is a job you want. You might have most of the qualifications, but a few of them that are required, but not the main qualifications. If you want the job, you might have to fake those until you actually teach it to yourself or something like that. You have to use common sense.

If you want to be a pipe designer or something, but don't know the first thing about doing it, you can't fake that until you make it. You must have had an experience with an idiot who thought that applies to everything.

Yes. "You not a good candidate for therapy at this time," were her exact words. So, frick it. I'll deal with it my own way.

Well that sucks, but I would recommend not quitting and trying to find a better therapist. Like any profession there are good and bad ones.

bullshite. It's excellent advice and has nothing to do with inauthenticity or lying or being a cheeseball. It just means that in life, if we are to grow, we must get out of our comfort zones and try to master difficult things. And since we don't start at mastery, we are best served by projecting confidence into the world while we learn. So in essence we "fake it". Half of life is just showing up and the other half is putting in the work. When you BEGIN to put in the work you may have to fake it for a while until you master it and rather than be a sad sack just project confidence and competence.
