“A university spokesperson confirmed Thursday that a coroner's report lists 18-year-old Marakah Dennis' cause of death as acute viral meningitis. Dennis was found dead in Cypress Hall Sept. 17.”

Should I wait around for the apologies from the assholes on here who suggested that she died of a drug overdose? Or have they already run for the hills.

I thought that was the speculation at the time? Or maybe I’m thinking of someone else.

Viral means there is a very real reason to be concerned going forward. Fungal meningitis is isolated. This is cause for real concern, way more so than the flu.

CDC says viral is less severe than bacterial.
Theres no specific medication for viral meningitis as most recover in 7-10 days.
This girl likely didn't die from meningitis alone.

Few doctors are going to identify meningitis unless they're looking for it though. Spinal tap is a semi serious procedure and a diagnostic requisite.
Viral is contagious, but there'd have to be some pretty intimate fluid exchanges at play for transmission, normally- needles, anal penetration or fecal ingestion. fungal is not contagious but contracted from exposure to, usually, mold. I'd be interested in seeing if they did a tap and whether it's for sure viral and not fungal. Those dorms are relatively new, could be some shoddy workmanship and mold issues at play?
Meningitis buttfricks the body's immune system functionality and can quickly open the door to permanent damage and may be lethal untreated.

At first I thought you might be an authority on the subject. Then....

What's the point of confusion lad? Read up on black mould.
Ok, I see what you're taking issue with- got my wires crossed mid-post and it's late. tried cleaning it up- I am certainly not an authority.

I said I would if I was wrong and here I am. I apologize to her family who may be reading this for assuming it was drugs. Never would’ve thought VM.

my friend's sister caught meningitis in one of the dorms from not wearing shoes in the shower.....

This is seriously concerning in a campus dormatory.

Agreed. LSU officials surely started going into PR mode when they were notified of this. I hope they’ve already reached out to everyone she was close to and had contact with.

Was it your sister? Did you have a bet on it?

Those dorms went up quick
I passed them everyday and couldn't believe they could be built that fast
Would not shock me if there was mold issues

She died Sept 17, is that still necessary at this point?

I'm pretty sure that is not right.
There are multiple viruses that can cause meningitis including the Non-polio enteroviruses (most common), any of the herpes viruses (which include the cold sore variety and Chicken Pox/Shingles), the influenza virus and West Nile virus. Changing the diapers of a baby with the virus is enough to catch them as well as whatever will give you the flu. Most people who get the virus do not get meningitis.

I have 2 kids at LSU living in dorms now, my daughter (no pics you pervs) was in that dorm for Stripes this summer. My wife and I are on the LSU parent page. The mom of the roommate of the poor young lady who died gave out the info about meningitis before the official statement was released. Her daughter was at home that weekend, had she been there perhaps a better outcome could have happened, it is indeed a sad turn of events.
