Whoever let her use that thing should be fired.

What is with letting celebrities use historical items?

What's the story behind the flute? Where did it come from? How did Madison acquire it? How did the Library of Congress acquire it?

This may not seem like a big deal, but it is. The point of this stunt, and others like it, is to send the message that your national symbols and national heroes are not important. They’re a joke. They deserve to be mocked, degraded, and ridiculed, and they do it right in your face while you watch helplessly. They want you to feel demoralized.

Man, you guys just reach for anything. She seemed pretty appreciative and respectful in the other video. The only reason I've ever heard of her before is this board. I wouldn't melt over some fat chick playing a flute.

I would have said the same thing about any pop creature, regardless of political leanings. Had Lizzo played it respectfully, I wouldn't really care. The first part where she plays it in the hall, I wasn't really upset. Seh is actually a trained flute player, and isn't horrible.

But letting your jiggly bits hang all over while you twerk and play it? Nah, that deserves the ridicule.

You're right, and if they left it at that, I don't think anyone would care. But that second video was disrespectful as hell.

Back then, the only people of Lizzo’s size were in traveling circuses.

There are people obsessed with degrading and destroying everything that came before. They insist on telling us that ugly is beautiful. This is just another example. That walking blob of cholesterol is a symptom of the cultural rot being pushed on us right now.

So, a much better writeup of the flute is here LOC Blog

It is suggested the flute passed through many hands until it was donated in 1941.

Also more about the preparation and care that goes into accessing artifacts like this
LOC Newsroom

quote:

Before Lizzo arrived, the Library’s curators in the Music Division made sure that it could be played safely and without damage. This sort of thing is not as unusual as it might sound. Many of the Library’s priceless instruments are played every now and again, even the five stringed instruments by Antonio Stradivari. Those, in fact, were given to the Library by Gertrude Clarke Whittall with the stipulation that they should be played from time to time. Music fans can hear the Library’s Stradivari and some of our other classic instruments — the 1654 Nicolò Amati violin and Wanda Landowska’s Challis clavichord — during the fall 2022 Concert Series.

quote:

So when Lizzo asked if she could play the flute at her Tuesday concert in front of thousands of fans, the Library's collection, preservation and security teams were up the challenge. When an item this valuable leaves any museum or library, for loan or display in an exhibition, preservation and security are the priorities. At the Library, curators ensure that the item can be transported in a customized protective container and a Library curator and security officer are always guarding the item until it is secured once more.

For obvious reasons, we don't say much more about security in public. But when the Library sent Thomas Jefferson’s Koran to the World Expo in Dubai last year, conservation, preservation and strict environmental requirements were enforced. The Library and the State Department executed a plan to transport and securely display the Koran. A Library professional with experience preserving and maintaining the security of important cultural items accompanied the Koran at every step.
