He celebrated his birthday on January 13. His father, Charles Pool, served in the 6th West Virginia Infantry during the conflict. This is just a reminder of how little removed from those historical events we really are.

His dad would have had to be a really old geezer to sire him.

I remember my grandfather telling me he knew a few men who fought in the Civil War when he was a boy but a biological child still being alive is pretty incredible.

Wow, reminds me of the sons of James Polk being still around?

Edited: It was John Tyler, 10th President who has one living Grandson. Tyler was born in 1790. His living grandson is 92.

Was his mom the lady that was the widow of a Civil War veteran who died in the last decade or so?

She was young whenever she married the veteran.

A little nugget. Young women would marry CW vets to get their pension which transfered to the spouse. As a result, you have 75-80 year old vets pumping out kids.

ETA

Last widow to receive a CW pension died in 2020

Son was born in 1925, which was 60 years after the end of the war. Paw had to have been more like 75-80 at the time of conception.

One of us is bad at math. It might be me. If the guy is 97, he was born in say 1924. That's 60 yrs after the Civil War. I'm assuming the youngest veteran might have been 14 so his dad would have been in his 70s when he was conceived. Right?

Let’s say his dad was 16 at the end of the war.

1864 -16 means his dad was born in 1849 The son was born in 1924

1849 to 1924 = 75 years old at conception. DAMN I’m 44 and my GF (26) is talking about wanting a baby and that is kind of old in my mind

Was probably a super young bride that married him for his pension.

There is a picture in my family of a toddler sitting on the lap of an old man. The toddler is my uncle, my father's oldest sibling who was born in 1925, and the old man is my great, great grandfather who served in the 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery. He passed in 1927.

I find it unbelievable that we are really connected across time.
