re: The Keto diet can’t possibly be good for you

It's 2020 and people still believe that fat is bad for them

Keto is not just eating butter. If your dad assumes that’s what it is, he isn’t very intelligent, but I assume he knows more than you’re letting on.
I will say, my brother(firefighter in Washington DC) has been on keto for almost a year and loving it. He lost some weight to start, now maintains, but was never anywhere close to overweight. He loves it and continues on(outside of random breaks, normally for holidays).

You get skinny fat on keto. No muscle tone or leanness. Just skinny with fat.

It's basically a low carb diet but you increase your fat intake. 70-80% fat from total daily calories, 5-10% carbohydrate, and 10-20% protein.
Yes it works. Yes it goes against everything you were "taught" back in the 70's 80's about low fat diets. Complex carbs and sugars are bad for you.
Bottom line to losing wait is take in less calories than you burn. Cut out the carbs and sugar. Also limit alcohol.
Carbs and sugar affect me differently than some people. I switched from beer to bourbon. No carbs or sugar in bourbon. These craft beers people drink are killer for any diet plan.

Not that hard to find advice from researchers and registered dietitians instead of pseudo experts who know everything because they once put food in their mouths:

Well, if you workout you won’t be skinny fat. If you just lose weight you will, like any diet.

Drop the greens and the sweet potato or so. That works so much better.

I agree. Most are too lazy to workout tho because well, that takes effort, so they only just diet.

What diet increases muscle mass?

Add weight lifting and cardio in like a normal person that diets should do.

as with anything, you can't take it to the absolute extreme
cutting carbs is good for you. all the magic of keto may not be why. also, getting into ketosis is hard and sucks, imho
but even if you're in ketosis, eating 10k calories is going to keep you fat

point is you can't knock a diet for not increasing muscle mass when no diet increases muscle mass.

well if you're talking about losing fat, diet is about 90% of it
if you're talking about aesthetics, working out is much more important

So your problem is not with keto per se. It's that being in really good shape takes more than just diet. No kidding.

It takes diet and exercise together. One without the other doesn’t get you anywhere. You’re just chasing your tail.

quote:Similar story here, started around 255, got as low as 185 and got lazy with it and stopped two years ago. Obviously gained some back, but you learn how to cook and regulate your eating as well on keto, and through that I've maintained around 195 since. Now I'm not going to pretend like that's anything close to what I should be at, but it's definitely better off than the 60 extra pounds I was carrying for years.
I've been doing "lazy" keto for 3 years now, off an on. By lazy, I mean I don't count my carbs and just avoid sugar and starches as much as possible. It's allowed me to get off high cholesterol meds as my numbers dropped back into the normal zone. I also lost 30 pounds and have kept them off for the most part.

You're arguing with yourself here.
