As early as 2026, new cars will have to come equipped with "advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology."

The new car you buy will have to come equipped with a futuristic breathalyzer, should the bipartisan infrastructure proposal currently working its way through Congress become law. Included in the 2,700-page bill is a provision directing the U.S. secretary of transportation to issue regulations for new motor vehicles requiring them to come equipped with "advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology." This new prevention technology would have to "passively detect" whether a driver is impaired and "passively" measure his blood alcohol concentration to see if it's above the 0.08 percent limit set by federal regulations. If this technology does determine a driver is impaired or over the limit, it will have to be able to stop someone from driving his vehicle.

Uber is going to blow up in Louisiana.

ETA: don't expect insurance to go down in Louisiana. Rather, they'll raise the rate on vehicles without this system.

I know MADD supports this, but I bet police and sheriff’s unions will quietly oppose this.

If we could perfect the self driving car this wouldn't even be an issue.

And how much more carbon will be released into the atmosphere to manufacture cars with this feature?

People who don't drink are going to be forced to pay extra for a device that doesn't apply to them?

If perfected, I see no problem with this and would support it. Problem is it will not be perfect and would result in unintended consequences.

They already go bananas with these minor emissions issues throwing every warning light and code in existence. The last thing I want to break on my car is something that can shut down the engine and lock the wheel.

If it prevents drunk driving...great. But you know damn good and well that the interlock device will eventually fail and cost a fortune to replace.

Also buried deep in the pages is a provision for the Feds to subsidize union dues. Guess what that is aimed at. Also, a provision that gives the Union man leverage over the employer in any labor dispute.

You didn’t pay extra for it.

It can be turned off.
