It's not a defense of officers, it's simply a fact. There are plenty of good cops, but there are far more that are dirty than the "back the blue" folks would have you think.
I can get down with that

and yet people here were bitching that it was unfair Baltimore just canned their police chief
FYI-this all happen under the previous police chief Batts. Davis who was fired last month had only been on the job for 28 months.

The officers cracked open the safe, which had about $200,000 inside. They took $100,000 out
But did they claim it as income on their taxes? Hmmmm???

Garbage men die at higher rates than cops... would not accept or tolerate this from them.
Granted, that garbagemen vs. cops thing is a national statistic. I'd imagine being a cop in a place like Baltimore is much more dangerous than almost anything else out there.
Doesn't excuse this sort of behavior one bit, but I've seen those statistics thrown out there, and they are a bit misleading.

I knew it wouldn't take long for this shite.
This guy was the police commissioner for 30 years. Care to try again?
Kevin Davis is white. It's a systematic problem.

It's been going way before batts too.
This Jenkins guy: wow

This Jenkins guy: wow

the plea, Jenkins admitted that he had stolen large amounts of cocaine, heroin and marijuana in the course of his day job taking drugs off the street, and turned to “D.S” to sell them back onto the streets. They split the profits, totaling as much as $500,000.
quote:
Stepp’s plea says the scheme took place between 2015 and 2017, and it revealed that Jenkins brought him to search locations in Baltimore City, Baltimore County “and elsewhere,” with Jenkins falsely telling other law enforcement agencies that Stepp was a city officer. Stepp is the third civilian defendant to plead guilty to helping the officers facilitate their crimes.

In one case, Jenkins admitted that he stole and resold about 50 pounds of “high-grade” marijuana that had been intercepted by police in the mail. In another case, he got word of a car that police searched and found more than $35,000 in, but the driver was let go because nothing illegal was found. Jenkins put an illegal GPS tracker on the car and had an associate break into it while it was unoccupied and steal the cash.

Considering the risks and pay
The job is very stressful and the risk of getting hurt or killed is higher than the average job, but the risks aren't extreme. Most cops can go their whole careers without much danger. The pay, benefits, and pension are also way better than most jobs.
It's impossible to make an apples to apples comparison but IMO the dangers of the job don't usually lead to corrupting a cop. People who are corrupt look for jobs with power. Like pedophile priests and doctors.

Baltimore is this close to taking the top spot as Murder Capital USA! Go for it Baltimore! You can do it!

Pretty surreal and I definitely feel bad for all the good cops getting a bad name for this. Lock these guys up and throw away the key.
Similar to the Rampart division scandal in LA and the Miami River cops in Miami.
In the 80s departments were hiring lots of hoodlums.

Because you used up all your strength hauling duffel bags of money and drugs to your cop parties.

The Force by Don Winslow is a great novel on shite like this (task force cops stealing from dealers).
It is especially good at tracing the mindset of going from mildly dirty cop to full blown police gangsters and how they justify/reconcile it.

It's still very difficult to be an officer. You not only must be in decent physical shape, but you must pass a pretty thorough background investigation, polygraph, psych exam, interview with senior officers, and then make it through the academy. There's only so much you can do to stop shitbags.
Not every dept has those measures in place. However, I would imagine larger metro PDs like Baltimore probably do.

I'm not upset about that either. But I'm thrilled that scumbags with badges are being purged.
