This is probably a dullard question but these shows like Stern, Colbert and such that the host is paid $100mil a year. Is that just Sterns paycheck or does that go to Stern Inc or Colbert Inc and they pay the staff, rent the studio and keep what's left over? Or is it something in the middle?

From what I heard Stern say his contract was with him and he paid staff separately from Sirius. But some employees were also Sirius employees. That was how some hosts ensured their independence from the broadcaster or network owning the content of show.

During his waning years at CBS radio he began fighting to own his own content from his NBC and CBS days. When he left for Sirius, he sued to own all this content and eventually bought the rights to all of it.

Now, in my opinion, that also was detrimental to his satellite days as they relied too heavily on old content and was doing as few as 3 days a week of new content with best of Stern or Mamory Lane Retrospectives on Mondays and Fridays. You also had constant vacation weeks so to a listener accustomed to having new content every day would tune in and expect a new show, but instead they got a 1996 interview with some B list celebrity.

I was never really a big fan of Stern, but did follow his career from time to time and listened on occasion when I had Sirius. I found him edgy and someone who liked to push the limits of radio, but as was said something happened in 2010’s and he became a liberal and lost his edge.

Stern has always been lame, but I feel like I’ve been hearing he’s going to retire/quit/be fired for at least the last 10-15 years. So I won’t be holding my breath.

Coincidentally when they cut USAID.

You think USAID paid part his salary for SiriusXM?

The thing is, by moving to satellite, he lost that niche. SXM has (or had) multiple comedy stations that were uncensored and would be considered hard R or even X rated in what they broadcast. There were also Playboy and Vivid branded channels with actual porn stars discussing the industry. Stern just became another tree in the forest.

I don't understand why someone his age who has made that much money would still want to work. Same with many politicians.

Hasn't been funny since Artie was fired. Anyone recall when he said that he is no longer voting democrat?LINK
Stern has completely sold out his audience to Hollywood lunatics and the liberal media. It really got started when Marcie Turk became his boss. Plus covid gave him TDS. Good riddance

As much as Howard has fallen off, it’s not a surprise he’s bowing out. Sirius may not want to renew but I’m pretty sure Howard never intended to renew either.

This is the Howard that Sirius XM thought they were paying for. Instead, they got liberal pussyass Stern.

Interesting how all these looney bin shows with overpaid hosts are being canceled suddenly after the teat ran dry.

South Park is probably next
