So the -Minimum- amount that you can possibly make isn't enough to rent a 2 bed apartment? Shocker.

Having been to the islands several times, it's really depressed as far as most of the locals go. Take Oahu... It's rather incredible to drive from Honolulu north to the North Shore. Some of the prettiest views you could ever see.

I moved back from there in short order because it was so depressing. It's as if it's a 3rd World America in paradise

I think it's a "you can't support a family on min. wage" argument.

If you have a family and can't find a job paying more than minimum wage, your only skill to offer a company is being a drain.

These people need to take a long look in the mirror.

Seems like dual income would be better

If you take a long look at yourself it could pay pretty well.

Why is a single person making minimum wage needing a two bedroom house?

"without paying more than 30% of their income".

Why is THAT a condition? Housing is one of the most expensive items for any family. And why is it a 2-BR? A studio can house a family of 2 easily. A 1-BR can easily house 3-4.

This is the problem, is that people don't really know what hardship looks like. In years past, people just would've "done without" in order to save enough money.

I figured about 25% of their check goes to Nonc Sam. Assuming single male. I know thats the minimum I had taken out when I was single.

Thats exactly why you leave taxes out. It's a hard variable to normalize.

1) someone making minimum wage is not in the 25% tax bracket even marginally. Nor are most of the numbers given here.

2) Even you didn't have an effective tax rate of 25% when you were single.

Because 30% of your gross is a lot of money, and the typical threshold for sustainability on average.

30% of your gross is a decent amount of money, certainly. But, it's definitely possible to handle 35% or even 40% on housing, depending on other budget considerations.

Point is, this map has some very odd constraints.

Right. I agree possible doesnt equal typical.

But, what I'm saying is...why is THIS the way the information is presented? If you're going to place a qualifier, it ought to be based on something more affordable than a 2BR home for less than 30% of gross income...

It's to show you can't support a small family on minimum wage

Before I got married, I had roommates. Point is, all these single people and single parents are doing it wrong.

They do it everyday. For example, in Cali, if you make minimum wage, you probably don't live (or shop) Rodeo Dr.

Where does the "rent should not exceed 30% of your income" recommendation come from, exactly? I didn't see it in the article.

Most places won't approve you to live there unless you make 3-4x the rent.

I see nothing wrong with this. You arent supposed to live off of Minimum wage at 35hours/week. If thats all you have, you need to get another job.
