Multiply the wage shown by 160 to get the salary per month. Take 30% of that to get the cost of rent.

For Arkansas, 30% of monthly salary at $13.72/hr is $658.56

That's not accurate.

40 * 52 = 2080
2080 / 12 = 173.33 hour/month average (NOT 140)

173.33 * $13.72 = average monthly income of $2,378.087
.30 * $2,378.087 = estimated rent of $713.426

A single parent making $15k/year - hell, double it at $30k/year - would be eligible for:

Food stamps
Child tax credit
Practically free health insurance
Dependency Exemption
Earned Income Tax Credit
Dependent care credit

Probably eligible for government assisted housing as well.

Im on a salary of $38,000 with a family of 4. If I never went offshore to make a lick of OT, I promise you I couldnt get govt assistance.

More prevalent than the maladjusted loser with no friends getting a 2 bedroom apartment for no reason when he can't afford it. He would live in a one bedroom.

And you know nobody forced anyone to have a baby. But shite happens to people they can't control, like a parent taking off, or dying.

You know divorce is really common, right?

Such a flawed study. Comparing whole states is stupid because there are obviously more expensive (cities) and less expensive (rural) areas in every state. Rent in San Francisco is going to be much less than rent in rural (or suburban) California.

You are correct

31,500 is the ceiling for food stamps for a family of 4

Having children out of wedlock.

Not graduating High School.

Not staying married (if you already are).

If you do the exact opposite of these three things, you are almost guaranteed to NOT live in poverty.

I'll post the article link here in a minute.

This is a sobering reminder that the average minimum wage worker cannot live beyond their means in the US using the metrics provided in the link. This is an outrage.

Thats for a 2 bedroom, meaning that 2 wage earning people will live there, so you can cut that price in half.

So two people making $8/hour would be fine in Louisiana. Sounds about right.

Minimum wage jobs are meant for entry level jobs for kids with no experience. It's not meant to be a living wage. I made minimum wage for all of 3 months when I was 16.

Great. I said $30k, which would qualify for food stamps.

Does your spouse work? Is your combined income higher than $38k?

And $38k would qualify you for the child tax credit, health insurance subsidies, dependency exemptions, the ETC, and the dependent care credit.

Point still remains that the OP is far too simplified and is making an irrelevant argument about affording a two bedroom apartment on one salary.

this is based off of people providing for themselves and not taking government handouts.

No it isn't. SF is more expensive than living in rural California.

*To work 40 hours/week, only spend 30% of gross income on housing for a 2 bedroom rental home in the 40th %ile of the housing market (while being literally the bottom %ile of full-time workers) without splitting rent with anyone when averaged over each state as a whole.

Psssst...these are numbers at the STATE level, not at the largest-city-in-the-state level.
