Didn't the Varsity used to show adult movies when it was a theater?
No. The Varsity never showed Porn. There was another theatre in the area that showed Porn. Don't remember exactly where it was. it was in a shopping plaza sort of like the Broadmoor theatre was but it was in the LSU area.

The movie theater that showed Porn was “The Regina”
There is a thread on the Movie forum called “ BR theaters of yesteryear” That talks about all the old theatres

Maybe late 90s, but I didn't know the Varsity was once a movie theater.

As I recall, during the late 80's, it showed artsy type movies.
Yeah, when I was at LSU (1983-1986) that's what they showed. I saw Liquid Sky and Koyaanisqatsi during that time, two pretty good examples of 80s artsy-fartsy movies....

A porn movie theatre to boot. I have an old gate receipt book from the 70s and it showed softcore coed titty movies all the time.

“$8 Economy Weekend”. Drinking with Lincoln on Friday and $3 Saturday night beer bust. It’s amazing to think about..
Spin the wheel on Wednesday, and a host of other drink specials that killed too many brain cells for me to remember.
They let you drink at 18, even in 89. I was going there when I was still in high school.
The LSU rugby team were the bartenders and bouncers. So much fun watching someone make the mistake of taking a swing at one of them.

I am taking this thread in a different direction by asking this, but does anyone know why it was once sort of socially accepted to have porn theaters in the 70s then all of a sudden they went away?

Video stores.....then internet
Posted on 3/11/20 at 10:20 am to Thecoz
The video stores had a portion roped off and behind a curtain....
You had to be 21? To go in and look at tapes and rent them... that was the soft and hard porn section

Obviously people preferred to jerk off in private with VCRs and video tapes as opposed to risking getting PeeWee Herman-ed in a public theater. VCRs killed porn theaters and it was for the better. I can't imagine how creepy and gross it must have been to watch porn in a public venue.

The Chimes part was various drugstores, hence the corner door that used to be the front entrance until the mid-90s. The varsity opened as a movie theater in the 1930s, was a softcore porn theater in the 70s, a more 'art' type theater in the 80s, and then became a music venue in the 1990.

Wasn't there also a place called "The Bicycle Shop"?
The Bicycle Shop is still there. It's next door to the Raising Canes.

Wouldn't that same logic apply to all movies?
But I am talking more about social acceptance. I remember reading something about how when Deep Throat came out there were public figures who went see it, etc.
Today, could you imagine if a public figure was seen out watching an x rated movie?

Remember when the restaurant next to it was Round the Corner. You would go in sit down and pick up a phone in the booths and order burgers, etc. The place was dingy dark and greasy and never closed. It was not so much a restaurant as it was a lifestyle.

you make a good point..
but in the past we did a lot if things that were just accepted.....and now are not....

Why does everyone always forget about the best bar Baton Rouge ever had, TA's Tavern?
$8 economy weekend. Friday was drinkin’ with Lincoln ($5) and Saturday was $3 beer bust. But to be fair, there was really only 1 reason to go to TA’s and it was to get backed out for cheap and sing rugby songs
