Watching the HGTV show Home Town: Inn This Together.

They complete a restoration of an old department store in downtown Laurel and turn it into a hotel. Lots of work, looks good, about to open.

Fire.

Clarion Ledger

quote:

On Aug. 26, 2025, the hotel caught fire early in the morning.

Later, the fire was determined to be accidental and caused by an electrical issue.

quote:

A fan recently asked whether the owners will rebuild on Erin Napier's Instagram post. "There is nothing but waiting now to see what happens with insurance," she replied on Sunday, May 10.

So 9 months later and it looks like the insurance company hasn't paid anything?

Is there more to the story? Insurance fraud allegations?

Any Laurelites here know anything?

Not from Laurel but I know enough Pine Belt folks to know to avoid Laurel.

This article has a little more info that says the insurer is Liberty Mutual.

Since then, the owners of The Heirloom have reportedly been in an insurance claim battle with Liberty Mutual. The insurance giant has frustrated the Napiers and the hotel owners by not approving a claim made after the fire and covering costs for restoration efforts.

I find it odd that nobody is talking about what is holding things up.

Was it a wording in the policy? Foul play?

I would imagine their loan provider would require them to have a pretty robust policy.

Liberty Mutual average payout time is well over 6 months and usually over a year if they are attempting to dispute liability claims. There probably isn't much information out there because this is being handled by lawyers on each side.

We stopped off the highway to use the restroom there on our way back from Tennessee years ago. We must have stopped in the ghetto part of town.

Just sucked into this because my wife likes the show and I don't mind tuning in here and there. Seems like they are getting screwed by Liberty Mutual.

No telling. Laurel is a strange town. Enough old money that numerous people literally list their occupation as "philanthropist," money from new industry and relocated outsiders, the smelliest sewage lagoon and chicken plants in America, and the highest crime per capita in Mississippi.

And Temu Chip and Joanna. All in the free state of Jones

I'm assuming what you see on TV it's just the downtown area and a couple of residential streets. Other than that, the rest of it could be any small southern town.

Fixer Upper used to do the same thing. Some of the houses they flipped were in bad areas, but they strategically didn't show too much of that. Sometimes, there was no way to avoid the unsightly surrounding buildings.

If anyone has ever participated in one of those '80s mall threads on this board, they should do themselves a service and visit the existing Saw Mill Square Mall in Laurel while it's still in operation.
