I know they don't do the flying but are they also pilots or could they be?

They are there to pee on the pilot to keep them warm if they get too cold

In all seriousness, the second seat is mostly used for initial training and upgrade training, although there are specific wartime purposes. Such purposes would be weapon system initiation and radar/navigation.

Well I know they do something like that but are they pilots as well but just weren't good enough to fly the jet, so they were given that job instead?

Probably his mother in law telling him what he is doing wrong.

He's there to get killed by the pilot's mistake so the pilot learns a valuable lesson that makes him a better man and helps him redeem himself in the finale.

When you’re flying a multimillion dollar jet you want redundancies. I think they can fly it but usually don’t.

The reason I ask is because Maverick or maybe Goose made reference to how Slider actually wanted to fly. instead of being Iceman's frickboy.

IIRC the backseaters eyesight requirements aren't as stringent.

Depends on the type of aircraft. Air-to-Air or Air-to-Surface missile firing aircraft are typically manned by actual pilots in both seats.

Other aircraft have “Navigators” that aren’t qualified to do the actual flying.

Yes, they can fly the equipment if push came to shove. Similar to a caddy in the PGA. On a muni course they're shooting 6 under, put them on a Sunday dogfight in Augustus and they're probably 10 over at best.
