he wasn't the greatest actor, but he was one of the greatest comedy writer/producer/directors of all time.

He is responsible for the most quotable movie one liners than any single person in Hollywood history. I would bet 90% of American men over 60 could quote 3-4 lines just from his movies being brought up in conversation.
